Background to THE Interview

About Jeremy Griffith (pictured right)

Jeremy is an Australian biologist who has dedicated his life to bringing fully accountable, biological understanding to the dilemma of the human condition; which is the underlying issue in all human life of our species’ extraordinary capacity for what has been called ‘good’ and ‘evil’.

Jeremy has published six books on the human condition, including the Australasian bestseller A Species In Denial (2003), and his definitive treatise, FREEDOM: The End Of The Human Condition (2016).

His work has attracted the support of such eminent scientists as the former President of the Canadian Psychiatric Association Professor Harry Prosen, Australia’s Templeton Prize-winning biologist Professor Charles Birch, the Former President of the Primate Society of Great Britain Dr David Chivers, Nobel Prize winning physicist Stephen Hawking, as well as other distinguished thinkers such as Sir Laurens van der Postsee testing.humancondition.com/#commendations.

Jeremy is the founder and patron of the World Transformation Movement (WTM)see testing.humancondition.com.

About FREEDOM: The End Of The Human Condition

Jeremy’s book FREEDOM, which this interview is about, presents the reconciling and psychologically healing biological explanation of our ‘good and evil’ stricken human condition. In doing so it unravels the core mystery behind human behaviour, thus ending suffering and conflict at its sourceand providing the now urgently needed road map for the complete transformation of our lives and world.

FREEDOM was launched at the Royal Geographical Society in London in 2016, with the keynote address by Sir Bob Geldof. It is freely available at testing.humancondition.com, or you can purchase hard copies at bookstores, including Amazon.

Part 1 of THE Interview

The psychosis-addressing-and-solving, real
biological explanation of the human condition

Craig Conway: Hello to everyone listening. My name is Craig Conway. Now, whilst I’ve been an actor by profession, very recently I’ve been introduced to doing radio where I talk to people from all over the world. Well, today I have a very, very special guest on the line from Australia.

The turmoil and trauma of this pandemic has only amplified the now dire need in the world for a deeper, lasting solution to all the chaos and suffering in human life. And this deeper enduring solution is actually what this biologist I’m about to interview is going to provide us with. He is going to do it by explaining and solving the underlying cause of all the suffering, which is our ‘good and evil’ stricken so-called human condition.

So I don’t care what you’re doing, you need to stop and listen to this interview. In fact, I don’t care what you do for the rest of your life, if you can you just need to listen to this!

The interview will be in four parts, each averaging 15 minutes, which is not a lot when you consider that we’re going to be explaining the whole human condition!

So it’s a great privilege to introduce Australian biologist Jeremy Griffith. He’s the author of a book titled FREEDOM: The End Of The Human Condition, and this is my copy, which I’ve had with me now for quite a long time and I take it everywhere with me, and there are now millions of people all over the globe studying, reading and researching through this book that Jeremy has brought to us. [Craig learnt of Jeremy’s explanation of the human condition in early 2019, and became so impressed by it he started a WTM Centre in north east England to promote it; see www.WTMNorthEastEngland.com.]

So, I’m here to tell everyone that this book has not only blown me away, it has also impressed Professor Harry Prosen, who is a former president of the Canadian Psychiatric Associationso he’s one of the world’s leading psychiatristsand he said, and I quote, ‘I have no doubt Jeremy Griffith’s biological explanation of the human condition is the holy grail of insight we have sought for the psychological rehabilitation of the human race. This is the book we have been waiting for, it is the book that saves the world.’ End quote.

Now, I think everyone listening would agree that ‘the psychological rehabilitation of the human race’ is exactly what this world needs! So buckle into your seats, this is going to be the most interestingand excitingtalk you have ever heard.

So Jeremy, thank you for talking with us. Tell us, how does your work bring about ‘the psychological rehabilitation of the human race’ and end all the suffering and strife, and, as Professor Prosen said, ‘save the world’?

Jeremy Griffith: Thank you very much for having me on your program Craig. Finding understanding of our psychologically troubled human condition has actually been what the efforts of every human who has ever lived has been dedicated to achieving and has contributed to finding. As Professor Prosen said, finding understanding of the human condition has been ‘the holy grail’ of the whole human journey of conscious thought and enquiry.

We humans have absolutely lived in hope, faith and trust that one day, somewhere, some place, all the efforts of everyonebut of scientists in particularwould finally produce the completely redeeming, uplifting and healing understanding of us humans. I know it must seem outrageous to claim that this goal of goals has finally been achieved, but it has. In fact, the human condition is such a difficult subject for us humans to confront and deal with that I couldn’t be talking about it so openly and freely if it hadn’t been solved.

Craig: Okay then Jeremy, solve the human condition for us, we’re all ears!

Jeremy: Firstly, I’m a biologist, and that’s important because I think everyone will agree that what we need is a non-abstract, non-mystical, completely rational and thus understandable, scientific, biological explanation of us humans.

So how are we to explain and understand the human condition, understand why we humans are the way we are, so brutally competitive, selfish and aggressive that human life has become all but unbearable. In fact, how are we to make so much sense of our divisive behaviour that the underlying cause of it is so completely explained and understood that, as Professor Prosen said, the whole of the human race is psychologically rehabilitated and everyone’s life is transformed?

Craig: Yes, that’s what we want; the human condition finally explained, fixed up and healed forever!

Jeremy: Exactly Craig. So, to start at the beginning, I know everyone listening is living with the beliefwell it’s what we were all taught at school and are told in every documentarythat humans’ competitive, selfish and aggressive behaviour is due to us having savage, must-reproduce-our-genes instincts like other animals have.

I mean, our conversations are saturated with this belief, with comments like: ‘We are programmed by our genes to try to dominate others and be a winner in the battle of life’; and ‘Our preoccupation with sexual conquest is due to our primal instinct to sow our seeds’; and ‘Men behave abominably because their bodies are flooded with must-reproduce-their-genes-promoting testosterone’; and ‘We want a big house because we are innately territorial’; and ‘Fighting and war is just our deeply-rooted combative animal nature expressing itself’and the most common comment of all Craig is that ‘It’s just human nature to be selfish’.

Craig: Yes, that’s exactly what I’ve understood is the reason for our competitive and aggressive naturethat we have brutally competitive, survival-of-the-fittest instincts, which we are always having to try to restrain or civilise or try to control as best we can; I mean that’s what I was taught in school.

Jeremy: Yes, that’s what we were taught, but let’s think about thisand what I’m going to say now is very important, so I hope everyone’s listening closely.

Surely this idea that we have savage competitive and aggressive, must-reproduce-our-genes instincts cannot be the real reason for our species’ competitive and aggressive behaviour because, after all, words used to describe our human behaviour such as egocentric, arrogant, inspired, depressed, deluded, pessimistic, optimistic, artificial, hateful, cynical, mean, sadistic, immoral, brilliant, guilt-ridden, evil, psychotic, neurotic and alienated, all recognise the involvement of OUR species’ fully conscious thinking mind. They demonstrate that there is a psychological dimension to our behaviour; that we don’t suffer from a genetic-opportunism-driven ‘animal condition’, but a conscious-mind-based, psychologically troubled HUMAN CONDITION.

Our ape ancestors were not savage, barbaric brutes as they have for so
long been portrayed, but rather they were innocent, loving nurturers as
depicted below by the paleoartist Jay H. Matternes in Science magazine.

What’s more, we humans have cooperative, selfless and loving moral instincts, the voice or expression of which we call our consciencewhich is the complete opposite of competitive, selfish and aggressive instincts. As Charles Darwin said, ‘The moral sense…affords the best and highest distinction between man and the lower animals’ (The Descent of Man, 1871, ch.4). Of course, to have acquired these cooperative, selfless and loving moral instincts our distant ape ancestors must have lived cooperatively, selflessly and lovingly, otherwise how else could we have acquired them? Our ape ancestors can’t have been brutal, club-wielding, competitive and aggressive savages as we have been taught, rather they must have lived in a Garden of Eden-like state of cooperative, selfless and loving innocent gentlenesswhich, as I’d like to explain to you later in this interview Craig, is a state that the bonobo species of ape is currently living in, and which anthropological findings now evidence we did once live in. For instance, anthropologists like C. Owen Lovejoy are reporting that ‘our species-defining cooperative mutualism can now be seen to extend well beyond the deepest Pliocene [which is well beyond 5.3 million years ago](‘Reexamining Human Origins in Light of Ardipithecus ramidus’, Science, 2009, Vol.326, No.5949).

So saying our competitive and aggressive behaviour comes from savage competitive and aggressive instincts in us is simply not trueas I’d like to come back to shortly, it’s just a convenient excuse we have used while we waited for the psychosis-acknowledging-and-solving, real explanation of our present competitive and aggressive human condition!

Craig: Wow, so that’s a pretty big statement Jeremy, I mean it’s a pretty important point you’re making here. You’re saying that our competitive and aggressive behaviour is not due to must-reproduce-our-genes instincts like other animals, but is due to a conscious-mind-based, psychologically troubled condition, yes?

Jeremy: Yes, our egocentric and arrogant and mean and vindictive and even sadistic behaviour has nothing to do with wanting to reproduce our genes. That was absurd. And it is actually really good news that our behaviour is due to a conscious-mind-based psychologically troubled condition because psychoses can be healed with understanding. If our competitive and aggressive behaviour was due to us having savage instincts then we would be stuck with that born-with, hard-wired, innate behaviour. It would mean we could only ever hope to restrain and control those supposedly brutal instincts. But since our species’ divisive behaviour is due to a psychosis, that divisive behaviour can be cured with healing understanding. So that is very good news. In fact, incredibly exciting news, because with understanding we can finally end our psychologically troubled human condition. It’s the understanding of ourselves that we needed to heal the pain in our brains and become sound and sane again.

As I said, the ‘savage instincts’ explanation was just a convenient excuse while we searched for the psychosis-addressing-and-solving real explanation of our divisive behaviour, which is the explanation I would now like to present.

Craig: Okay, so what you’re saying here, Jeremy, is that we don’t need the convenient excuse anymore that we have some kind of savage animal instincts because we have the real explanation of our conscious-mind-based psychologically troubled human condition!

Jeremy: Yes, and this key, all-important, psychosis-addressing-and-solving explanation is actually very obvious.

If we think about it, if an animal was to become fully conscious, like we humans became, then that animal’s new self-managing, understanding-based conscious mind would surely have to challenge its pre-existing instinctive orientations to the world, wouldn’t it? A battle would have to break out between the emerging conscious mind that operates from a basis of understanding cause and effect and the non-understanding instincts that have always controlled and dictated how that animal behaves.

Craig: Yes, that makes sense Jeremy, so what happened though when this animal became conscious and its whole life turned into a psychologically distressed mess?

Jeremy: Well, the easiest way to see what happened is to imagine the predicament faced by an animal whose life had always been controlled by its instincts suddenly developing a conscious mind, because if we do that we will very quickly see how that animal would develop a psychologically troubled competitive and aggressive condition like we suffer from.

So let’s imagine a stork: we’ll call him Adam. Each Summer, Adam instinctually migrates North with the other storks around the coast of Africa to Europe to breed, as some varieties of storks do. Since he has no conscious mind Adam Stork doesn’t think about or question his behaviour, he just follows what his instincts tell him to do.

But what if we give Adam a large brain capable of conscious thought? He will start to think for himself, but many of his new ideas will not be consistent with his instincts. For instance, while migrating North with the other storks Adam notices an island full of apple trees. He then makes a conscious decision to divert from his migratory path and explore the island. It’s his first grand experiment in self-management.

But when Adam’s instincts realise he has strayed off course they are going to criticise his deprogrammed behaviour and dogmatically try to pull him back on his instinctive flight path, aren’t they! In effect, they are going to condemn him as being bad.

Imagine the turmoil Adam will experience: he can’t go back to simply following his instincts. His instinctive orientations to the migratory flight path were acquired over thousands of generations of natural selection but those orientations are not understandings, and since his conscious mind requires understanding, which it can only get through experimentation, inevitably a war will break out with his instincts.

Ideally at this point Adam’s conscious mind would sit down and explain to his instincts why he’s defying them. He would explain that the gene-based, natural selection process only gives species instinctive orientations to the world, whereas his nerve-based, conscious mind, which is able to make sense of cause and effect, needs understanding of the world to operate.

But Adam doesn’t have this self-understanding. He’s only just begun his search for knowledge. In fact, he’s not even aware of what the problem actually is. He’s simply started to feel that he’s bad, even evil.

Craig: Okay, so what you’re saying is a war has broken out between his conscious mind and his instincts, which he can’t explain, and it’s left him feeling bad or that he is bad in some way, or even evil. So what happened then?

Jeremy: Well, tragically, while searching for understanding, we can see that three things are unavoidably going to happen. Adam is going to defensively retaliate against the implied criticism from his instincts; he is going to desperately seek out any reinforcement he can find to relieve himself of the negative feelings; and he is going to try to deny the criticism and block it out of his mind. He has become angry, egocentric and alienatedwhich is the psychologically upset state we call the human condition, because it was us humans who developed a conscious mind and became psychologically upset. (And ‘upset’ is the right word for our condition because while we are not ‘evil’ or ‘bad’, we are definitely psychologically upset from having to participate in humanity’s heroic search for knowledge. ‘Corrupted’ and ‘fallen’ have been used to describe our condition, but they have negative connotations that we can now appreciate are undeserved, so ‘upset’ is a better word.)

So Adam’s intellect or ‘ego’ (ego being just another word for the intellect since the Concise Oxford Dictionary defines ‘ego’ as ‘the conscious thinking self’ (5th edn, 1964)) became ‘centred’ or focused on the need to justify itselfAdam became ego-centric, selfishly preoccupied aggressively competing for opportunities to prove he is good and not bad, to validate his worth, to get a ‘win’; to essentially eke out any positive reinforcement that would bring him some relief from his criticising instincts. He unavoidably became self-preoccupied or selfish, and aggressive and competitive.

So our selfish, competitive and aggressive behaviour is not due to savage instincts but to a psychologically upset state or condition.

Basically suffering psychological upset was the price we conscious humans had to pay for our heroic search for understanding. In the words from the song The Impossible Dream from the musical the Man of La Mancha, we had to be prepared to ‘march into hell for a heavenly cause’ (lyrics by Joe Darion, 1965). We had to lose ourselves to find ourselves; we had to suffer becoming angry, egocentric and alienated until we found sufficient knowledge to explain ourselves.

Craig: Wow Jeremy, I mean this is just fascinating. So Adam Storkwe humansdeveloped a conscious mind and unavoidably started warring with our instincts, an upsetting war which could only end when we could explain and understand why we had to defy our instincts, which is the understanding that you have just supplied, yes?

Jeremy: Exactly, remember Adam Stork became defensively angry, egocentric and alienated because he couldn’t explain why he was defying his instincts, so now that we can explain why, those defensive behaviours are no longer needed and can end!

That’s basically all there is to explain, that is the biological explanation of the human condition that so explains us that, as Professor Prosen said, it brings about ‘the psychological rehabilitation of the human race’!

Craig: This is such a simple story but so far-reaching in its ramificationsI mean it is world-changing is what it is, because it truly enables ‘the psychological rehabilitation of the human race’! I mean that is just wonderful.

Okay, I’m speaking with Australian biologist Jeremy Griffith.

Part 2

Since this instinct vs intellect
explanation is reasonably obvious,
why haven’t we been taught it at school?

Craig: Hello, I’m Craig Conway and I’m talking with Australian biologist Jeremy Griffith about how we can end all the turmoil and trauma in the world through explaining and understanding the human conditionwhich is the instinct vs intellect explanation Jeremy has just given us in Part 1 of this interview.

I do have some questions Jeremy. Firstly, while it seems an obvious explanation that when we became conscious a psychologically upsetting battle must have broken out with our dictatorial instincts, but if it is so obvious, why weren’t we taught this at school? And secondly, how were our bonobo-like ape ancestors able to become cooperative and loving, which, as you said, must be the origin of our instinctive moral conscience that Darwin said distinguishes us from other animals? And my third question is, how does ‘the psychological rehabilitation of the human race’ that Professor Prosen describes actually take place; I mean do we all have to go into therapy or something?

Okay, by the way, I want to mention also that since there’s quite a few newand very interestingconcepts to think about, Jeremy has said that he’ll make both the video and the transcript of this interview available at the top of the website that promotes this understanding of the human condition, which is the World Transformation Movement’s website at HumanCondition.com. Now this interview will be there as a video, and the transcript as a little free book, so you can re-listen to, or read the interview again there, because, as I said, with this big subject of the human condition, there is quite a bit to take in and think about.

Jeremy: Okay, they are very good questions Craig.

So, to begin with your first question, which is that if this instinct vs intellect explanation is so obvious why haven’t we been taught it at school?

The answer is that while it has been recognisedeven from ancient timesthat the emergence of our conscious mind somehow caused us to ‘fall from grace’, or however you want to describe the corruption of our original innocent cooperative, selfless and loving instinctive state, it wasn’t until science revealed the difference between the gene-based and nerve-based learning systemswhich is that genes can orientate but nerves need to understandthat we were finally in a position to explain the good reason for our angry, egocentric and alienated human condition.

The Biblical story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden that Moses wrote so long ago in about 1,500 BC actually perfectly describes the psychologically upsetting battle that emerged between our instincts and conscious intellect. It says Adam and Eve/we humans took the ‘fruit’ (Genesis 3:3) ‘from the tree of knowledge’ (Gen. 2:9, 17) and were ‘disobedient’ (the term widely used in descriptions of Gen. 3). In other words, we developed a conscious mind and free will. But in that pre-scientific story it says Adam and Eve then became ‘evil’ (Gen. 3:22) perpetrators of ‘sin’ (Gen. 4:7) because they became angry, egocentric and alienated, and as a result Moses said they were ‘banished…from the Garden of Eden’ (Gen. 3:23) state of cooperative and loving innocence.

You see, not knowing how naturally selected instincts differ from cause and effect-operating consciousness, this story of Adam and Eve becoming conscious could only conclude that the angry, egocentric and alienated condition that emerged when we became conscious was a bad, evil, sinful state, but this scientific presentation says, ‘No, no, that story got it wrong’. Adam and Eve are actually not just good but the heroes of the whole story of life on Earthbecause surely the conscious mind is nature’s greatest invention and to be given the task of searching for understanding while the whole world’s condemning you was the hardest and toughest of tasksbecause that condemnation was universal. All the other innocent storks are condemning the search for knowledge, and since all of naturethe rain, the clouds, the trees, and other animalsare all associated with our original instinctive self that was condemning us, the whole world, in effect, ganged up on Adam and Eve, i.e. us humansand yet all the time we were good and not bad but we couldn’t explain why, but now at last through the benefit of science, we can.

Craig: Yeah, I hadn’t realised that, but it is true, I mean Adam and Eve taking the fruit from the tree of knowledge is a metaphor for becoming conscious, and then they were thrown out of the Garden of Eden of original innocence because it appeared that they were bad for doing so, but now thankfully we can explain that they, we humans, weren’t bad at all; in fact, we are the heroes of the story of life on Earth!

Jeremy: That’s right, we can now explain and understand that we conscious humans are immense heroes, and not villains after all. How relieving is that!

American journalist and educator, Richard Heinberg giving a public presentation

Richard Heinberg (1950– )

And with regard to recognition of the upsetting conflict between our moral instincts and our conscious intellect, the Biblical story of Adam and Eve is far from the only recognition of it from ancient times. Indeed, as the researcher Richard Heinberg summarised in his 1990 book Memories & Visions of Paradise (underlinings are Jeremy’s emphasis), ‘Every religion begins with the recognition that human consciousness has been separated from the divine Source, that a former sense of oneness…has been lost…everywhere in religion and myth there is an acknowledgment that we have departed from an original…innocence and can return to it only through the resolution of some profound inner discord…the cause of the Fall is described variously as disobedience, as the eating of a forbidden fruit [from the tree of knowledge], and as spiritual amnesia [forgetting, blocking out, denial, alienation, which is our psychosis](pp.81-82 of 282). So all our religions and most of our mythologies have recognised the basic conflict within usthat the emergence of ‘consciousness’ caused our ‘Fall’ from ‘innocence’.

Detail of a mosaic by Monnus of Hesiod, 3rd century; in the Rhenish State Museum, Trier, Ger.

Hesiod, from the Monnus mosaic, c.200

Way back in about 800 BC, the Greek poet Hesiod wrote of our species’ pre-conscious time of living cooperatively and lovingly in his epic poem Works and Days: ‘When gods alike and mortals rose to birth / A golden race the immortals formed on earth…Like gods they lived, with calm untroubled mind / Free from the toils and anguish of our kind / Nor e’er decrepit age misshaped their frame…Strangers to ill, their lives in feasts flowed by…Dying they sank in sleep, nor seemed to die / Theirs was each good; the life-sustaining soil / Yielded its copious fruits, unbribed by toil / They with abundant goods ’midst quiet lands / All willing shared the gathering of their hands’ (The Remains of Hesiod the Ascræan, tr. C.A. Elton, pp.17-18). So yes, they didn’t have a troubled conscious mind, and they lived a sharing, gentle life.

Craig: Yes, I’ve heard of the idea of a ‘golden race’, but I didn’t actually know where it came from. So what you’re saying then, Jeremy, is our distant ancestors had a ‘calm untroubled mind’no human condition yet!

Jeremy: Yes, that’s right, and in 360 BC Hesiod’s Greek compatriot Plato gave this very similar description of our species’ pre-conscious time in innocence. He wrote: ‘there was a time when…we beheld the beatific vision and were initiated into a mystery which may be truly called most blessed, celebrated by us in our state of innocence, before we had any experience of evils to come, when we were admitted to the sight of apparitions innocent and simple and calm and happy, which we beheld shining in pure light, pure ourselves and not yet enshrined in that living tomb which we carry about, now’ (Phaedrus; tr. B. Jowett, 1871, 250).

Triptych showing marble bust of Plato and the covers of his books Phaedrus and The Statesman

Plato, c.428–348 BC; Phaedrus; Statesman

Plato also gave this other description of the innocent ‘Golden Age’ in our species’ pre-conscious past, writing of a time when we lived a ‘blessed and spontaneous life…[where] neither was there any violence, or devouring of one another, or war or quarrel among them…In those days God himself was their shepherd, and ruled over them [in other words, our original instinctive self was orientated to living in an ideal cooperative, loving way]…Under him there were no forms of government or separate possession of women and children; for all men rose again from the earth, having no memory of the past [in other words, we lived in a pre-conscious state]. And…the earth gave them fruits in abundance, which grew on trees and shrubs unbidden, and were not planted by the hand of man. And they dwelt naked, and mostly in the open air, for the temperature of their seasons was mild; and they had no beds, but lay on soft couches of grass, which grew plentifully out of the earth’ (The Statesman, c.350 BC; tr. B. Jowett, 1871, 271-272).

The thing is, Hesiod and Plato, like Moses, were living at a time when science still had to be developed, so they weren’t able to provide the redeeming, instincts-can-orientate-but-only-nerves-can-understand, good reason WHY we departed from ‘innocence’ and seemingly became ‘evil’, bad people.

Craig: Yes, because there was no science back then.

Jeremy: Precisely, it’s only in the last 150 years or so that science has given us A: the ability to know that the gene-based natural selection process gives species orientations to the world; and B: the knowledge of our nerves and how they are able to remember events, which, much developed, has led to our mind being able to sufficiently understand the relationship between cause and effect to become conscious of, or aware of, or intelligent about those relationships. So that’s only happened in the last 150 years, but since the fossil record of our ancestors suggests that our large association-cortexed, thinking, fully conscious brain appeared some 2 million years ago, that means for almost all of the 2 million years we have been conscious we have had no ability to explain and understand why we corrupted our original innocent instinctive self or soul. And without that redeeming explanation the only way we could cope with the astronomical guilt of having destroyed ‘Eden’, has been to deny we ever lived in a cooperative and loving innocent stateand that’s exactly where the excuse that we have savage competitive and aggressive instincts like other animals came to our rescue.

And, false as it is, it’s been an absolutely brilliant excuse because instead of our instincts being all-loving and thus unbearably condemning of our present non-loving state, they are made out to be vicious and brutal must-reproduce-your-genes instincts like other animals; and, instead of our conscious mind being the instinct-defying cause of our corruption, it was made out to be the blameless mediating ‘hero’ that had to step in and try to control those supposed vicious instincts within us! And those who dared to admit the truth of our cooperative and loving past, like Hesiod and Plato, were dismissed as deluded romantics, and the whole idea of an innocent, Edenic past was said to be nothing more than a nostalgia for the security and maternal warmth of infancy, that it was ‘never an historical state’ as the Jungian psychologist Erich Neumann said in his book The Origins and History of Consciousness (1949, p.15 of 493).

Erich Neumann

Erich Neumann (1905–1960)

Craig: Yes, and we couldn’t face the truth that we had turned utopia into dystopia, into a dreadful place of conflict and suffering, yes?

Jeremy: Yes that’s right Craig, and I should point out that while most contemporary thinkers have clung to the savage instincts excuse for our divisive behaviour, there have been some who, like the ancient thinkers, truthfully recognised the basic instinct vs intellect elements involved in producing the human condition. Eugène Marais, Paul MacLean and Arthur Koestler are a few who come to mind.

But while all contemporary thinkers have had the benefit of science having revealed the difference between the gene-based and nerve-based learning systems, and have therefore had the means to truthfully explain the human condition, those who did recognise the basic instinct vs intellect elements didn’t take their thinking far enough to actually explain the human condition. And those who have been attached to the false savage instincts excusewhich is the great majority of scientistsobviously haven’t been thinking truthfully, so they couldn’t hope to explain the human condition. Which is all why it has taken the truthful thinking of the pre-eminent South African philosopher Sir Laurens van der Post, and following him, myself, to finally present the complete, true explanation of the human condition.

Craig: Okay. And Jeremy, I assume that people can read about the contemporary thinkers who recognised the instinct vs intellect elements involved in the human condition, and those who clung to the savage instincts excuse, on the World Transformation Movement’s website at HumanCondition.com?

The most famous book by Sir Laurens van der Post (1906–1996) (left) is The Lost World
of the Kalahari
, which is about the relatively innocent Bushmen or San people of
the Kalahari Desert. Its title can be interpreted as ‘the lost world of our soul’.

Jeremy: Yes, they can, in particular in the fourth video at the top of the homepage.

Also, how Sir Laurens van der Post and I managed to address and solve the human condition is described in my 2020 book How Laurens van der Post Saved The World, which is also freely available on that website. Basically, what is explained in that book is that since everyone is naturally variously psychologically upset from their different encounters with humanity’s battle to find knowledge, there was always going to be a few who were fortunate enough in their infancy and childhood to escape encountering the angry, egocentric and alienated effects of that upsetting battle, and it is these few who could look into the human condition without being overly confronted by itand Sir Laurens and I were two of these extremely fortunate denial-free thinking people, which is how we were able to find understanding of the human condition.

I should also say that while there is growing support for this now absolutely desperately needed understanding of the human condition, mainstream science is yet to recognise and support itbut that’s what happens with paradigm-shifting, breakthroughs in science. When the physicist Max Planck said ‘Science progresses funeral by funeral’ (Marilyn Ferguson’s reference to a comment by Planck in his Scientific Autobiography, 1948; New Age mag. Aug. 1982; see www.wtmsources.com/174) he was recognising how attached each generation of scientists becomes to the way of thinking they grew up with, and therefore how slow science as a whole is to move to a new paradigm of understanding. And the playwright George Bernard Shaw also warned of how difficult it is to introduce a new paradigm of thinkingespecially one that dares to confront the historically unbearably confronting and off-limits subject of the human conditionwhen he said that ‘All great truths begin as blasphemies’ (Annajanska, 1919). So yes, confronting the human condition when everyone has been living in fearful denial of it, even though it has finally been explained and made safe to confront, represents the biggest of all ‘blasphemies’.

Craig: Yeah, I understand completely. I mean from my limited experience, Jeremy, I know how difficult it is to get people to change their way of thinking. But your basic point is that science’s discovery of the way genes and nerves work has finally made it possible for the liberation of humanity from the horror of the human condition.

Jeremy: Yes, that is the essential truth: science is the liberator, the so-called ‘messiah’ or ‘redeemer’ of humankind, as we always hoped it would be!

Craig: And all this is in the nick of time Jeremy, because I actually don’t think the world can cope with any more upset behaviour from us humansbut of course we still need the scientific community to get on board and support this understanding.

Jeremy: Absolutely. While we’ve had to live in denial of our corrupted, psychologically upset condition while we couldn’t explain it, the truth is that on a graph showing the ever-increasing levels of upset in humans, those levels, especially of psychosis and alienation, have been increasing so rapidly lately that the line tracking their rise is near vertical with the amount of upset virtually doubling now in each new generation! Freedom Essays 55 & 59 on our World Transformation Movement’s website describes this terrifying end play threat of terminal levels of psychosis. Basically, we had virtually lost the race between self-destruction and self-understanding.

Graph showing the ever-increasing levels of upset in humans and the threat of terminal psychosis

The race between self-destruction and self-understanding

Indeed, early last century the author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry wrote that ‘We are living through deeply anxious days, and if we are to relieve our anxiety we must diagnose its cause…What is the meaning of man? To this question no answer is being offered, and I have the feeling that we are moving toward the darkest era our world has ever known’ (A Sense of Life, pub. 1965, pp.127, 219 of 231), and the ‘deeply anxious days’ have very greatly increased in the century since then, so we are now very much in the midst of ‘the darkest era our world has ever known’so this world-saving, ‘reliev[ing]-of-the-‘cause’, understanding of ‘the meaning of man’, has definitely only arrived in the nick of timewhich means the scientific community definitely, definitely needs to get its act together and support this breakthrough!

Antoine de Saint Exupery

Antoine de Saint Exupéry (1900–1944)

So now I’ll address your other questions Craig, but I should mention that the first of the videos on the World Transformation Movement’s website warns of the difficulty not only scientists have had, but almost everyone has had trying to confront and think about the historically unbearably confronting subject of our corrupted condition which has finally been explained and made safe to confront and admit.

Craig: I’m Craig Conway and I’m speaking with Australian biologist Jeremy Griffith.

Part 3

How did we humans acquire our instinctive
cooperative and loving moral conscience?

Craig: We’re continuing our important conversation with Australian biologist Jeremy Griffith who’s been explaining the human condition and how understanding it can end all the trauma and suffering in the worldand boy, don’t we need that!

So in Part 1 Jeremy explained that we conscious humans became angry, egocentric and alienated because we couldn’t explain why we had to defy our instincts, but now that we can explain this and understand ourselves those defensive ways of coping are no longer needed and the human race is psychologically rehabilitated.

In Part 2 Jeremy explained that the reason we had to use the dishonest savage instincts excuse is because science had to find understanding of the way genes and nerves work, that genes can orientate a species but nerves need to understand cause and effect.

So Jeremy, my second question for this, Part 3, of our interview is how were our bonobo-like ape ancestors able to become cooperative and loving, which, as you said, must be the origin of our instinctive moral conscience that Darwin said distinguishes us from other animals?

Jeremy: Yes okay, so how we acquired our moral instincts has been one of the greatest mysteries in biology. The primatologist Richard Wrangham described it as ‘A question that has lain unsolved at the core of biology ever since Darwin’ (in a review of E.O. Wilson’s 2019 book Genesis: The Deep Origin of Societies). And Darwin himself described it as the ‘one special difficulty’ with his concept of natural selection (On The Origin of Species, 1859, p.209 of 440). The reason for the ‘difficulty’and this is some basic biology for youis that genes normally can’t select for unconditionally selfless, fully cooperative traits, simply because such traits tend to be self-eliminating and so normally can’t become established in a speciesI mean, ‘By all means, you can be selfless and sacrifice your genes for me, but I’m not about to be selfless and sacrifice my genes for you.’ The process of natural selection dictates that selfish opportunism will supposedly always exploit selflessness, so how could such a selfish process as natural selection possibly have created such loving selflessness in us?

The answer is it was achieved in our forebears through nurturing. To explain what is so significant about a mother’s nurturing of her offspring, I first need to point out that a mother’s maternal instinct to care for her offspring is selfish because she is ensuring the reproduction of her genes by ensuring the survival of offspring who carry her genes. So maternalism is a selfish trait, which, as I’ve just said, genetic traits normally have to be for them to reproduce and carry on into the next generation. HOWEVER, and this is all-important, from the infant’s perspective maternalism does have the appearance of being selfless. From the infant’s perspective, it is being treated unconditionally selflesslythe mother is giving her offspring food, warmth, shelter, support and protection for apparently nothing in return. So it follows that if the infant can remain in infancy for an extended period and be treated with a lot of seemingly altruistic love, it will be indoctrinated with that selfless love and grow up to behave accordingly. So selfish maternalism can train an infant in altruistic selflessness. (Freedom Essay 21 on our World Transformation Movement’s website, and chapter 5 of FREEDOM explain this ‘love-indoctrination’ process, as we call it, more fully.)

Craig: So what you’re saying is that mothers’ nurturing of their infants is primarily genetically selfish because it ensures the reproduction of her genes, but to the infant it seems like it’s being given unconditionally selfless love.

Jeremy: Yes that’s right, and if we think about primates, being semi-upright from living in trees, swinging from branch to branch, and thus having their arms free to hold a dependent infant, it’s clear that they are especially facilitated to support and prolong the mother-infant relationship, and so develop this nurtured, loving, cooperative behaviour.

Bonobo mothers holding their infants

And in fact, bonobos, the ape species who live south of the Congo River in Africa, are extraordinarily matriarchal, or female role focused, and extraordinarily nurturing. You can find photos onlineand I’ll include some in the transcript booklet and video of this interviewthat illustrate just how nurturing bonobos are; they show bonobo mothers giving their infant their devoted and undivided attention!

Bonobos nurturing their infants

And as a result of all this nurturing, bonobos are the most cooperative and loving of all primates, which is evidenced by these absolutely amazing quotes that I just have to read to you.

Bonobo zoo keeper Barbara Bell writes that ‘Adult bonobos demonstrate tremendous compassion for each other…For example, Kitty, the eldest female, is completely blind and hard of hearing. Sometimes she gets lost and confused. They’ll just pick her up and take her to where she needs to go’ (‘The Bonobo: “Newest” apes are teaching us about ourselves’, Chicago Tribune, 11 Jun. 1998).

Primatologist Sue Savage-Rumbaugh says, ‘Bonobo life is centered around the offspring. Unlike what happens among chimpanzees, all members of the bonobo social group help with infant care and share food with infants. If you are a bonobo infant, you can do no wrong…Bonobo females and their infants form the core of the group’ (Sue Savage-Rumbaugh & Roger Lewin, Kanzi: The Ape at the Brink of the Human Mind, 1994, p.108 of 299).

A filmmaker of the French documentary Bonobos says, ‘They’re surely the most fascinating animals on the planet. They’re the closest animals to man [in that they share almost 99 percent of our genetic make-up]…Once I got hit on the head with a branch that had a bonobo on it. I sat down and the bonobo noticed I was in a difficult situation and came and took me by the hand and moved my hair back, like they do. So they live on compassion, and that’s really interesting to experience’ (short accompanying film to the 2011 French documentary Bonobos).

And bonobo researcher Vanessa Woods gives this first-hand account of bonobos’ unlimited capacity for love from her study of them in their home in the Congo basin: ‘Bonobo love is like a laser beam. They stop. They stare at you as though they have been waiting their whole lives for you to walk into their jungle. And then they love you with such helpless abandon that you love them back. You have to love them back’ (‘A moment that changed me – my husband fell in love with a bonobo’, The Guardian, 1 Oct. 2015).

Craig: Wow Jeremy, I mean these are astonishing quotes, they really are!

Jeremy: Yes, they truly are amazing quotesand bonobos are our closest living relatives, as mentioned they share 99% of our DNA. So we can see that bonobos provide the perfect evidence for how our distant ape ancestors became cooperative and loving.

I have another picture here of a group of bonobos resting in a grassy glade, which I will also include in the transcript booklet, and it perfectly equates with the description I mentioned earlier that Plato gave about what life was like for humans back in the ‘Golden Age’ of nurtured togetherness. Plato said, ‘And they dwelt naked, and mostly in the open air, for the temperature of their seasons was mild; and they had no beds, but lay on soft couches of grass, which grew plentifully out of the earth.’ Clearly we have a perfect instinctive memory (if we don’t choose to deny it) of what life was like before ‘the fall’ because Plato didn’t know of the existence of bonobos and yet knew exactly what our bonobo-like life before ‘the fall’ was like.

A group of Bonobos relaxing close to each other on green grass at the Lola Ya Bonobo Sanctuary, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Bonobos resting in a grassy glade

Now this quote is a bit long but it’s such a wonderful intuitive remembrance of our species’ bonobo-like time in an alienation-free, all-sensitive and all-loving state of innocence that I just have to read it out. It’s from the great Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky. He wrote of a time when: ‘The grass glowed with bright and fragrant flowers. Birds were flying in flocks in the air, and perched fearlessly on my shoulders and arms and joyfully struck me with their darling, fluttering wings. And at last I saw and knew the people of this happy land. They came to me of themselves, surrounded me, kissed me. The children of the sun, the children of their sunoh, how beautiful they were!…Their faces were radiant…in their words and voices there was a note of childlike joy…It was the earth untarnished by the Fall; on it lived people who had not sinned…They desired nothing and were at peace; they did not aspire to knowledge of life as we aspire to understand it, because their lives were full. But their knowledge was higher and deeper than ours…but I could not understand their knowledge. They showed me their trees, and I could not understand the intense love with which they looked at them; it was as though they were talking with creatures like themselves…and I am convinced that the trees understood them. They looked at all nature like thatat the animals who lived in peace with them and did not attack them, but loved them, conquered by their love…There was no quarrelling, no jealousy among them…for they all made up one family’ (The Dream of a Ridiculous Man, 1877).

This description of being ‘conquered by their love’ is so like the description just given by the bonobo researcher Vanessa Woods, when she said bonobos ‘love you with such helpless abandon that you love them back. You have to love them back’. Again we see how accurate our memory is, if we don’t deny it, of what life was like before ‘the Fall’.

Fyodor Dostoevsky

Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821–1881)

Craig: That quote is so wonderful, it’s just amazing, thank you Jeremy, I’m glad you read it out. This nurturing explanation for our moral instincts seems reasonably obvious, and evidenced by those quotes about bonobo behaviour and also by the photographs of the bonobos, so why haven’t I heard about this until now?

Jeremy: Well, just like the obvious truth that our species once lived cooperatively and lovingly, this truth that we acquired our moral instincts through nurturing has been an unbearable truth while we couldn’t explain why we humans became angry, egocentric and alienated and as a result lost the ability to adequately nurture our offspring with unconditional selflessness or love. The truth of our species’ Edenic all-loving and all-sensitive innocent past, and the truth that nurturing is what made us human, have both been impossible truths to accept while we couldn’t truthfully explain our present immensely corrupted human condition, explain why our species became so corrupted and lost the ability to fully nurture its offspring. As it’s been observed, ‘parents would rather admit to being an axe murderer than a bad mother or father’! (John Marsden, Sunday Life, The Sun-Herald, 7 Jul. 2002).

John Fiske photo

John Fiske (1842–1901)

In fact, this reasonably obvious nurturing explanation for our moral conscience was first put forward by the American philosopher John Fiske in his book Outlines of Cosmic Philosophy, which was published in 1874, only a few years after Darwin published his theory of natural selection. And, at the time, Fiske’s explanation was actually recognised as being, and I quote, ‘far more important’ than ‘Darwin’s principle of natural selection’ and ‘one of the most beautiful contributions ever made to the Evolution of Man’ (Dorothy Ross, G. Stanley Hall: The Psychologist as Prophet, 1972, p.262 of 482). And Darwin himself went so far as to write to Fiske saying, ‘I never in my life read so lucid an expositor (and therefore thinker) as you are’ (1874; Life and Letters of Charles Darwin, Vol. 2). But again, while we couldn’t explain our loss of ability to adequately nurture our offspring, this ‘far more important’ insight than ‘Darwin’s principle of natural selection’ was let die and eventually disappeared from biological discourse!

I might point out that 1) Darwin’s natural selection explanation for the variety of species; 2) Fiske’s and my nurturing explanation for our moral instincts; 3) the instinct vs intellect explanation that I’ve given for the human condition; 4) the explanation I give in chapter 7 of FREEDOM for how we humans became fully conscious when other species haven’t; and 5) the Negative-Entropy-driven integrative meaning of existence (which we have personified as ‘God’) that is explained in chapter 4 of FREEDOMwhich together are the five main questions science has had to answer about our world and place in itare all reasonably obvious, straightforward, simple explanations that bear out biologist Allan Savory’s observation that ‘whenever there has been a major insoluble problem for mankind, the answer, when finally found, has always been very simple’ (Holistic Resource Management, 1988, 1st edition, p.3). As FREEDOM makes clear, having to live in denial of the human condition has blocked our access to so many reasonably obvious truths.

Craig: Thanks Jeremy. This is really amazing to learn about how science has denied our species’ cooperative and loving heritage, and the nurtured origins of that cooperative and loving soul. But it all really does make senseI mean we certainly needed the defence for our corrupted condition before we could face the truth about it.

I am speaking with Australian biologist Jeremy Griffith.

Part 4

How does the psychological rehabilitation of the
human race that the arrival of understanding of the
human condition finally makes possible actually occur?

Craig: Hello and welcome back to Part 4 of the interview. I’m Craig Conway and I’m here with Jeremy Griffith, the biologist who has just explained how humans acquired our moral instincts. This is an absolutely remarkable interview!

So continuing on, Jeremy, what about my third question for this final Part 4 of the interview, which is how does ‘the psychological rehabilitation of the human race’ that this understanding gives us actually take place; do we all need to go into therapy or something?

Jeremy: Well, what this realand actually very obviousinstinct vs intellect explanation of the human condition fundamentally does is lift the ‘burden of guilt’ from the human race. It establishes that we humans are good and not bad after all. While we are all inevitably variously angry, egocentric and alienated from our different encounters with humanity’s heroic battle to find knowledge, ultimately self-knowledge, understanding of our corrupted condition, we can now know that every human is fundamentally good. And this ability to understand and know there was a good reason why the human race became psychologically upset, is the key, relieving understanding we have been in search of ever since we became conscious some 2 million years ago and our corrupted condition emerged.

That is the key relief for our mindbeing finally able to understand that we are good and not bad is what brings us the greatest psychological relief of all. The psychoanalyst Carl Jung said, ‘wholeness for humans depends on the ability to own our own shadow’, and since we can now ‘own’ the ‘shadow’ of our species’ 2-million-year-corrupted condition, the human race is finally in a position to become ‘whole’. The word ‘psychosis’ literally means ‘soul-illness’ and ‘psychiatry literally means ‘soul-healing’ (derived as they are from psyche meaning ‘soul’, osis meaning ‘abnormal state or condition’ and iatreia meaning ‘healing’see pars 63 & 72 of FREEDOM), but we have never been able to ‘heal our soul’, explain to our original instinctive self or soul that we, our fully conscious thinking self, is good and not bad and by so doing reconcile and heal our split selvesbut now at last we can.

Craig: Well, there is an adage that says ‘The truth will set you free’, so what you’re saying then Jeremy is that the truth of our fundamental goodness is the truth that we needed to set us free from the human condition.

Jeremy: Precisely, and while that is the main relief our mind needed, obviously the more we digest that relieving understanding, the more healing relief comes to every aspect of our upset conditionand to have had to endure being unjustly condemned as bad for 2 million years does mean there is a great deal of upset to heal.

To appreciate how much upset exists in us humans now, imagine living for just one day with the injustice of being condemned as bad, even evil, when you intuitively knew but were unable to explain that you were actually the complete opposite of evil, namely truly wonderful, good and meaningfulin fact not just good but the hero of the story of life on Earth! You would be hurt to the core and furious wouldn’t you! Now extrapolate that experience over 2 million years and we can begin to appreciate just how much volcanic frustration and anger must now exist within us humans! While we have learnt to significantly restrain and conceal‘civilise’ as we refer to itthe phenomenal amount of upset within us, under the surface we all must be boiling with rage, and sometimes, when our restraint can no longer find a way to contain it, that anger must express itselfhence our capacity for shocking acts of cruelty, sadism, hate, murder and war.

A collage showing examples of the volcanic anger in humans: Nazi rally; skulls from Pol Pot regime; Ku Klux Klan; wartime execution

We humans aren’t bad but we are certainly mad!

And no wonder we have led such an evasive, denial-practising, lying, avoid-any-criticism, escapist, alienated, superficial and artificial, greedy, egocentric, power, fame, fortune and glory-seeking existence. We have had to smother ourselves with material glory while we lacked the spiritual glory of compassionate understanding of ourselves.

Images showing: a winning sports team; a pile of money; a luxury sports car; and a lavish house

Material reinforcement had to sustain us until we found spiritual reinforcement, understanding.

So there is an enormous amount of upset to subside and heal in us humans, and that will obviously take time. In fact, we have to expect that it will take a number of generations to be completely ameliorated. But the good news, and this is very important, is that while it will take a number of generations to heal all the upset in us humans, everyone can immediately live free of their upset. The reason we can live free of it is that while we lacked the real defence and reinforcement of understanding of our corrupted condition, we absolutely needed the artificial defences and reinforcements of attacking any criticism of our corrupted condition, of denying and blocking it out, and of finding any positive reinforcement we couldanger, alienation and egocentricity are what sustained usbut now that we have the real defence and reinforcement of our fundamental goodness, all these artificial defences and reinforcements are obsoleted, they are no longer needed. In fact, to continue using the old artificial defences of retaliation, denial and the search for relieving power, fame, fortune and glory when our fundamental goodness has been established is not only clearly pointless but also unnecessarily destructive of ourselves, everyone around us and our planet. That way of living is now completely obsoleted, finished with.

Craig: That makes total sense; I mean our artificial ways of reinforcing ourselves are obsoleted by the real reinforcement of ourselves. One way of living ends, a new one begins, free of the human conditionphew, thank God for that!!

Jeremy: That’s for sure! Basically, now that our corrupted condition is finally truthfully explained, honesty replaces denial and the world heals. ‘Bullshit’, which is our everyday word for all the dishonest denial that’s been going on, protected us from all the truths about our corrupted condition that we couldn’t properly explain, but it was destroying the world and it now stops.

With this end of lying in mind, there’s one more thing I should explain, which is that socialism, the new age movement, the politically correct movement, and all the other idealistic movements, were actually all false starts to a human-condition-free world because the upsetting battle to find knowledge, ultimately self-knowledge, the psychologically relieving understanding of why we are good and not bad, still had to be completed. In fact, while dogmatically insisting that everyone should be cooperative and loving could make you feel that you were doing good and be superficially psychologically very relieving, such insistence on ideal behaviour denied people the freedom they needed to be able to continue the all-important upsetting search for knowledge. These movements were pseudo idealistic movements that stifled and oppressed the search for the understanding of our corrupted condition that was needed to actually free us from that state. They were regressive, not progressive as they deluded themselves they were. It was actually the right-wing who have supported the upsetting battle to find knowledge that held the moral highground, not the pseudo idealistic left-wing.

The culture of the Left made people superficially feel good but it was dangerously dishonest, it was fakeit was bullshit. Being concerned for others and the world is very important, but doing that to make yourself feel good is a dangerously selfish sickness, indeed it’s the most destructive of all drug addictionsand it’s been taking over the world. Dogma is not the cure, it’s the poison.

You can see here that the true instinct vs intellect explanation of the human condition finally enables us to explain and expose what’s wrong with the Leftand it’s not a moment too soon because its culture is rapidly taking our species to death-by-dogma extinction.

Marxist dummies falling over cliff cartoon by Jeremy Griffith

We humans needed to be able to think our way to sanity. Suppressing
freedom of thought turned humans into brainless robots destined to
march off the edge of hope into the chasm of extinction.

Now, most wonderfully of all, the instinct vs intellect explanation of the human condition not only exposes the culture of the Left for the human-race-destroying lie that it is, it also, as I said, brings to an end the whole upsetting search for the rehabilitating understanding of why we’re good and not bad, and what this means is that it’s no longer oppressive of that upsetting search to take up support of cooperative and loving idealismbecause that search is over. In fact, taking up support of cooperative and loving idealism is now the only way to live that’s justified! Suddenly there’s no longer any reason for the right-wing in politics and everyone effectively becomes left-wing. In fact, the whole business of politics basically ends with the finding of understanding of the human condition, and the whole human race sets out as one united organism letting go the angry, egocentric and alienated part of ourselves and supporting cooperative, selfless and loving idealism. (Much more is explained about pseudo idealism in Video/F. Essay 14 on the World Transformation Movement’s website.)

Craig: Yes, ending the polarised world of politics will certainly be one of the biggest reliefs imaginable!

Jeremy: Absolutely Craig. It will be a massive relief.

So that’s how the whole world suddenly, immediately changes from a psychologically embattled angry, egocentric and alienated state, to a world where everyone has decided to abandon their still-to-be-healed competitive and aggressive behaviour and takes up support of a cooperative and loving existence.

So finding understanding of the human condition brings to an end the insecure, upset, artificial-reinforcement-dependent angry, egocentric and alienated world. A new human-condition-resolved, cooperative, selfless and loving world now emerges. Light comes streaming into the dark cave-like world of denial that we have been living in, and it will all be like waking up from a nightmare!

Basically, with the ability to understand ourselves, we can return to our original cooperative and loving state, but this time fully conscious. As the poet T.S. Eliot anticipated, ‘We shall not cease from exploration and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time’ (Little Gidding, 1942).

I am so confirmed in my own view of our basic goodness taught or experienced by mystics in various religions. Jeremy Griffith explains it now in the context of science and evolution. He gives us hope that our psychological troubled condition can be healed if we transform our understanding of creation. I have bought his book. I will listen to the videos several times, read the book, so that it sinks in.

The human condition was described accurately by Jesus Christ, and He provided the ONLY answer for it. His death and resurrection, and our believing Him and accepting the salvation He provided. He, as He stated clearly is the one and only door to heaven and a reuniting with the family of God.

  9. Corvette on June 22, 2021 at 6:31 pm

I’ve never understood why some people are so angry and as you said it would take people like you and the other Professor to be able to come up with this concept. I’ve never heard that we think we were bad and that’s why we act the way we do. I’ve always been a loving person and maybe the reason is I was never taught that evil and that’s why I’m considered an empath so really what you’re saying is we should all be an empath but because of teaching some of us are not. I believe you are right and we should be teaching this truth in school and from day one. Thank you sir for helping me to understand what has been troubling me for so long.

  11. Derrick Baragwanath on June 22, 2021 at 8:15 am

Jeremy Griffith’s argument that nurture is the secret to man’s goodness is a perspective only. The ‘Nature or Nurture’ argument has been around for a long time. Good nurturing in the animal kingdom does not stop the formation of social hierarchies and the struggle to become the Alpha male that rules the harem. It could be equally argued that our ‘Original Sin’ or selfishness stems from our animal roots, and it is only man’s capacity for self awareness that allows us to become intellectually aware of our surroundings and via that empathy, for the suffering of others. I suspect the real battle within man is the choice between the embracing our capacity to empathize, or, to follow our selfish animal roots. Sadly, for most the former is too much like hard work, involving real physical sacrifice. Running with our base animal instincts is a much easier path and is, therefore adopted by most.

    • WTM Admin on June 24, 2021 at 4:30 pm

You’re correct Derrick, in saying that genetic selfishness rules most of the animal kingdom, however as Jeremy explains in Part 3 of THE Interview, and evidences through reference to the bonobos and the fossil record, through the nurturing based love-indoctrination process, it is possible over millions of years for the normal genetic selfishness in a species to be replaced by genuinely selfless instincts, which is the source of our empathy. (How humans breached this genetic impasse and developed our moral instincts is absolutely fascinating science which is summarised in our FAQ 5.2 ‘How did we acquire our all-loving, unconditionally selfless moral instincts?’).
And if humans do have genuinely selfless instincts not selfish instincts then we need to look afresh at human selfishness and how it emerged. What is being suggested is that when our intellect began to develop and challenge our already well-established instincts for control of our minds, a terrible battle broke out between these two systems. The result of this conflict between our instinct and intellect was an undeserved sense of guilt and insecurity that caused us to become psychologically defensive, angry, alienated and egocentric, the upset state we refer to as the human condition.
As Jeremy explains in THE Interview descriptions of our less-than-ideal condition, such as egocentric, arrogant, deluded, artificial, hateful, cynical, mean, immoral, alienated, etc, all imply a consciousness-derived, psychological dimension to our behaviour. We suffer from a consciousness-induced, psychological HUMAN CONDITION, not an instinct-controlled ANIMAL CONDITION. (Read more in chapter 2:11 of FREEDOM.)
There is a lot to absorb here but I suggest the more you do absorb it, the more it will dawn on you just how accountable the instinct vs intellect explanation is for the ‘battle within man’, and even why we have had to run with the excuse that we have ‘base animal instincts’ (you can read more about the ‘savage instincts’ excuse in FAQ 1.2).

A very valuable contribution to Humankind. The power of our subconscience is overwhelming in our daily life. This goes a long way in understanding what drives us and that judgement (“the Forbidden Fruit”) of ourselves and others is poisoning our lives.

In the future, decades from now, I hope we may teach in our children’s world history class the date of the creation of this theory as as pivotal of that of the origin of species, or moreso, for in the future it would be breakthroughs of the mental and spiritual world that are weighted more than those in the physical. And I’d like to set a deadline on when we solve the most destructive form of the human condition and the dissolution of traditional politics. 2027?

He tries to extrapolate things from bonobos. Bonobos have been shown to show tendencies to choose to associate with “hinderer” or dominant jerk apes more than “helper” or supportive apes. Showing that they dont have a moral compass at all but just cooperate when it comes to raising the young or gathering the food. But otherwise not anymore moralistic than your average rabid chimp

    • WTM Admin on June 24, 2021 at 5:10 pm

Jeremy Griffith explains the key biological distinction between humans and other animal species is that humans suffer from the conscious-mind-based, psychologically troubled human condition, not the genetic-opportunism-based, animal condition. While there are remnants of selfish reciprocity, sexual opportunism and aggression in bonobo behaviour they are extraordinarily loving, and far less aggressive than common chimpanzees. Without the defence of our own aggressive behaviour we have not been able to admit how cooperative bonobos actually are. See FAQ 5.2 ‘What do bonobos tell us about our own evolutionary heritage?’

You might want to add the scientific understanding of: THE ORIGIN OF CONSCIOUSNESS IN THE BREAKDOWN OF THE BICAMERAL MIND by Julian Jaynes. It is a fantastic text which explains why we were schizophrenic during a part of our human history.

    • WTM Admin on June 18, 2021 at 12:21 pm

Paul MacLean’s theory which states that humans are a mentally unbalanced species due to an inadequate coordination between our emotional old brain and our cognitive new brain is addressed in Video/Freedom Essay 4. It discusses that while many have identified the elements of instinct and intellect involved in creating the human condition, the biological breakthrough Jeremy Griffith’s treatise provides is the clarifying explanation of the nature of the conflict between them and explains without that explanation the conflict could not be resolved. This key biological distinction reveals our aggressive and ‘schizophrenic’ behaviour comes from the conscious-mind-based, psychologically troubled human condition, not the genetic-opportunism-based, animal condition or our reptilian brain.

  37. Margaret Smith on June 17, 2021 at 3:22 am

Jesus Christ never ever taught that we were bad. Julian of Norwich, Christian mystic said that “sin was behovely”. It was a necessary part of our growth. Your research confirms this scientifically. The Good News is that we are indeed made in the loving image of God. If you look into the history of the western church, it’s emphasis through the medieval era was on the sinfulness of man instead of the loving ness of man and that has not been helpful in understanding our human condition. All of the Christian mystics teach what Jesus taught , that to grow into wholeness we have to face our shadow side ( not bad in itself but destructive if left unaddressed). I think you are saying much the same. In addressing our psychosis and understanding that God holds us in completely unconditional love, just like the tribe you describe so beautifully, we are healed.
What l am trying to say is that your scientific approach and my spiritual approach are in fact one, and that surely this is healing and wholeness for the human race. We need both biological and spiritual to bring about the soul healing you speak of. We never were abandoned as “bad” by God, it was just bad teaching that has been the problem. More authentic and healing spiritual teaching is now more and more available for example Father Richard Rohr’s superb teaching. If you take the trouble to research this you will be well rewarded. As your interviewer said “Thank God for that!” God bless you all, Margaret

    • WTM Admin on June 18, 2021 at 12:43 pm

The study of the human condition is the realm of inquiry where science and religion overlap, so yes, now we can biologically explain the human condition, religion is demystified and not only are the universal ideals, that religion has upheld for humanity, confirmed, but we also now have the fully rational, compassionate and redeeming explanation for ‘sin’. Great wisdom can be found in some spiritual teaching, but ultimately our thinking mind needed understanding—specifically, scientific understanding of why when the ideals are to be loving and selfless are we so competitive and selfish? This is what Jeremy Griffith’s treatise does and why it is heralded as the breakthrough that can save the world. You can read about the reconciliation of science and religion that is now possible in FAQ 1.15 and FAQ 6.2.

  41. Richard Hartley on June 16, 2021 at 7:29 am

Easy as it is to believe the concepts presented there is one quite obvious flaw. In order for this information to disseminate throughout mankind massive buy-in will be mandatory. We all know there are millions of people who have no desire to change their ways and even believe there is nothing wrong. That said with still hundreds of millions of people worldwide who will not support the notions in the material it will make worldwide change of the human condition almost impossible, at least in the short term. If this is indeed the cure the disease still has generations to live.

    • WTM Admin on June 18, 2021 at 1:08 pm

As Part 4 of THE Interview explains, yes it will take generations for the upset within us to be completely healed but importantly we can be immediately free of its affects. Our FAQ 1.6 summarises how understanding the human condition is the universal solution to human suffering, and the Transformation section of our website illustrates the extraordinary transformation of the human race it makes possible in just three short video presentations. Basically, so exciting and relieving is this breakthrough, and the freedom from the human condition that is now on offer, that everyone will want it, and so it will catch on like wildfire and this is already happening! On our homepage you can see the rapidly growing appreciation and support for the WTM with outstanding commendations from thought leaders and WTM Centres all over the world!

    • WTM Admin on June 12, 2021 at 2:35 pm

Yes Marvin explaining the human condition will stop it, in fact it immediately transforms our lives! This is because we can now understand our behaviour has been driven by a deep insecurity about our fundamental goodness, and with that goodness biologically explained by Griffith we no longer have to behave insecurely and selfishly and can legitimately return to a selfless way of living. This is the rapidly transforming effect of this knowledge which is fully explained and illustrated on our Transformation page.

Biology is not the answer. Christ is the answer to the entire human condition. Pain and suffering given up for Him is the answer to an Eternity with Him. Nothing here but snake oil. The rehabilitation of humanity is through prayer to Jesus, Mary and the saints. Why be so concerned about the “Human Condition” or Enlightenment compared to finding the Church Jesus started when He was with us. Study the Shroud of Turin to understand that He rose from the dead, and that death is how we reach eternal life. Problem is, there are two paths, and yours is Wide… Look deeper into the Rosary for answers. PAX

I have been searching my whole life. Reading stories as a child, religious texts of major religions and national epics in my adolescence, then turning on to philosophy via Plato and Nietzsche and on to academic philosophy and the sciences. Then some 30 years of “adult” life with occasional reach-outs towards meaning and tryouts of various programmes.

I bet more people will be open to it that way!

      • WTM Admin on June 5, 2021 at 3:57 pm

Thank you for your helpful comment Ralph and yes people’s initial scepticism is warranted and is a hurdle some have to overcome. However, as you are discovering, the more you absorb the explanation the more you realise how profound and important it is. We are living with unprecedented levels of suffering in the world and if we are to end that suffering and bring about a truly ideal, loving and cooperative world we must understand its source, which is the human condition. That is why it is crucial to stand up and honestly say that this information solves the human condition. Also the astonishing claims being made about Jeremy Griffith’s work withstand scrutiny as what he presents is 100% logic which has attracted the support of eminent scientists and thinkers (see our homepage). We recommend our FAQ 1.9 ‘Should people be sceptical about claims’ and FAQ 1.17 ‘Shouldn’t your website be toned down’.

A liberating interview. It is surely counter to many world religions whose underlying belief is that humans are sinful, unclean, and separate from God. I’d like to see them go out of business.

    • WTM Admin on June 3, 2021 at 1:22 pm

With explanation of the human condition we can now understand that religions tried to make people afraid of behaving in an overly upset way so they would obey the cooperative ideals. The more upset people became, the more they needed to try to obey the ‘Godly’ ideals of life that religions taught, but the problem was such condemnation of upset behaviour could be extremely terrorising and oppressive. Obviously what was desperately missing was reconciling understanding of our upset behaviour and the Godly ideals; reconciling understanding of the human condition in fact — which is exactly what Jeremy Griffith presents us with. So no longer does anybody have to be terrorised by religious dogma. They can understand what such religious doctrine was providing (even though it could be hurtful) and the great role religions played in humanity’s journey (see FAQ 6.3 about understanding religion).

Quite puzzling that having established that our nature is co-operative and loving that he ends the interview going into a rant that could have come straight out of the mouth of Jordon Peterson. This is the problem when we come to an intellectual understanding of something and then become evangelical about a hypothesis but the mind is not enlightened its still operating from the point of view of discrimination. I think that the points about hunter gatherers may be true and it would be lovely if we could wake up to the madness we are in but this man can’t see he is doing the same thing himself.

    • WTM Admin on May 31, 2021 at 4:15 pm

Jeremy Griffith explains in THE Interview that the left-wing poses the real threat to humanity due to the fact that its dogmatically imposed pseudo-idealism gravely endangers freedom of thought and the search for understanding. We are living with unprecedented levels of suffering and unhappiness in the world and if we are to end that suffering and bring about a truly ideal, loving and cooperative world we must understand its source, which is the human condition. Jeremy is not ranting or being evangelical and he doesn’t excuse the right-wing for its corrupting behaviour nor unfairly focuses on the failings of the left but rather uses the strength necessary to explain and expose the serious threat posed by pseudo idealism. As FAQ 7.2 summarises the left-wing was leading humanity to oblivion, not to peace and happiness.

    • WTM Admin on May 22, 2021 at 3:53 pm

Yes this understanding does heal narcissistic behaviour. THE Interview explains that all humans are now variously angry, egocentric and alienated due to the human condition and, in the extreme, that psychologically upset state produces narcissistic behaviour. Finally we can appreciate that there was a very good reason—indeed heroic reason—for our upset; even such extreme expressions of it. Importantly, as FAQ 4.2 explains, this doesn’t condone such behaviour, rather, through the power of compassionately understanding its source it subsides and heals it.

Sooo… You mean to say that uncontacted tribes and many indigenous peoples are still not conscious? I would recommend catching up on some antropological research before claiming that what you describe as the human condition is indeed global… 🤔

    • WTM Admin on May 22, 2021 at 2:26 pm

There is no suggestion that uncontacted tribes and indigenous peoples are less conscious than other people. The point that is made is that because so-called ‘primitive’ people have not been as exposed to humanity’s heroic battle to find knowledge as less sheltered ‘races’ (ethnic groups), they are not as psychologically upset as those less sheltered races. However, all humans are now part of the extremely upset stage of humanity, H. sapiens sapiens, and are therefore nowhere near as innocent as humans were some 2 million years ago when the battle of the human condition first emerged. With the explanation of the human condition we can now understand that despite the differing levels of upset due to everyone’s different encounters with humanity’s heroic battle to find knowledge, we are all equally good – that is the key and significant point being made. We recommend you read Freedom Essay 28: The end of racism.

I find the basic concept of this argument for our (not arguing) very attractive. Its not a new argument that is based on science. Its what lies at the heart of all the non dual paths of spirituality.

    • WTM Admin on May 17, 2021 at 2:55 pm

Even though the explanation of the human condition is completely rational, accountable science, based as it is on science’s discovery of the difference in the way our nerve-based conscious intellect and our gene-based instincts work, it is completely reconciling of all the dualities that the human condition has caused. As such, it does penetrate to the heart of the “non-dual paths of spirituality”, but unlike spritituality, it brings scientific understanding to the issue. FAQ 6.5 explains the difference between the WTM and new age spirituality.

Truly profound and revolutionary, this insight is just what we need to transform the world and heal the human condition. As the world continues to plunge further into darkness, the next stage is to find a way to harness the theoretical knowledge to make a real and lasting difference. We all deserve a better quality of life, more equitable distribution of resources, and eradication of all of the social distress that is a direct result of the broken human spirit.

    • WTM Admin on May 17, 2021 at 3:02 pm

Our Transformation page continues on from what is presented in THE Interview and further explains ‘the next stage’ of how this ‘revolutionary insight’ transforms the human race from living in a wretched, ‘broken’ state of upset anger, egocentricity and alienation to living in peace, togetherness and happiness. And so exciting and relieving is this breakthrough, and the freedom from the ‘darkness’ of the human condition that is now on offer, it’s creating a tsunami of interesting and excited discussion and being part of that is the best possible way of furthering your understanding and discovering the amazing benefits it has for your life, and for the world. You can join the conversation on our WTM Community page.

Is this the basis for acceptance and commitment therapy?

    • WTM Admin on May 17, 2021 at 3:03 pm

Understanding and therefore healing the universal psychosis caused by the human condition, which Jeremy Griffith’s work does, is the basis for all therapy. While we are all inevitably variously psychologically upset from humanity’s heroic battle to find knowledge we can now know that every human is fundamentally good—we can accept and love our dark side. As Jung was forever pointing out, we can finally ‘own our own shadow’.

Thoroughly enjoyed this! I am a family doctor and I have become a hynotherapist in order to help the many distressed people I see. Changing the self talk of the conscious mind accessing the unconscious if possible can relieve a lot of the suffering of people!

    • WTM Admin on May 15, 2021 at 2:02 pm

The incredibly exciting news that THE Interview presents is that our distress and suffering is due to a psychosis that can be cured with healing understanding. This instinct vs intellect explanation of the human condition fundamentally lifts the ‘burden of guilt’ from the human race. It establishes that we humans are good and not bad after all. With this understanding we can finally end our psychologically troubled human condition. It heals the pain in our brains (changes the self talk) by reconciling our conscious mind with our unconscious instincts and we become whole again. Our Transformation page is full of information and videos about just how relieving, reconciling and healing this understanding is so that is a must visit!

I am cross that you strongly urge the reader to watch the videos. What for, can the very long book alone not sufficiently present the theory ?

    • WTM Admin on May 15, 2021 at 2:30 pm

THE Interview stresses that the human condition is a historically unbearably confronting and off-limits subject. Our experience has shown that it helps people get through these historic blocks if they can read/watch/listen to the explanation presented in different ways. These presentations include our popular Introductory Video Series and Jeremy Griffith’s definitive book FREEDOM which does present his entire biological treatise. Our FAQ 1.11 shows the different ways people can learn about this huge subject.

Thank God, thank you, finally an explanation that can help me free myself from the shame of the mistakes I’ve made in my life, and enable me to stop living in its shadow of guilt. A cooperative and loving way of life is what this world needs.

    • WTM Admin on May 11, 2021 at 12:02 pm

Richard your comment is a wonderful testament to the relief that knowing the suffering inside us can now end. As Jeremy explains in Part 4 of THE Interview “What this instinct vs intellect explanation of the human condition fundamentally does is lift the ‘burden of guilt’ from the human race. It establishes that we humans are good and not bad after all.” While we are all inevitably variously psychologically upset from humanity’s heroic battle to find knowledge, ultimately self-knowledge, we can now know that every human is fundamentally good. The only way we could legitimately return to our original cooperative and loving state was to be able to answer the essential question of why, when the ideals are to be loving and selfless, are we so competitive and selfish? This is what Jeremy’s treatise does and why it is heralded as being able to save the world. Our Transformation page is full of information and videos about just how relieving, reconciling and healing this understanding is so that is a must visit!

Yes June, Jeremy Griffith’s explanation of the human condition, brings biological understanding to religious accounts of our condition, which means we can at last reconcile science and religion. We recommend our FAQs about religion, especially 6.2 ‘What is God’ and 6.3 ‘Does this understanding undermine religion’.

  185. Annemarie Mullan on May 8, 2021 at 8:31 pm

This makes intuitive sense. I can’t wait to read the book. I feel an instinctive lightening of spirit at the thought of this absolution from the human condition.

  186. Gashumba Michael Victor on May 8, 2021 at 4:00 pm

Thank you for this information. The question is at what point does Adam change from animal to human?

    • WTM Admin on May 10, 2021 at 5:47 pm

It is generally accepted that it is humans’ fully conscious mind that separates us from the other animals. In Jeremy Griffith’s book FREEDOM ch 8:2 it is explained that the conscious mind broke free of the influence of our instincts with the early australopithecines (between 3.9 to 3 million years ago), which would equate with Adam in the Biblical story. A quick snapshot of the emergence of the conscious mind is given in the Development of Mental Cleverness graph that appears in ch 8.11C of FREEDOM. You might also find Freedom Essays 21 & 22, about how we acquired our moral instincts, and fossil evidence of our nurtured origins, of interest, which you can see here.

  187. Pauline Sherry on May 8, 2021 at 6:28 am

Totally mind blowing… The inciteful explanation is quite complex to get your head around, however it is something all humans at this moment in time, more than any other need to learn, understand and utilise for our world to become the world it should be. A human collective as one rather than a human selective of many. This is the moment, this is the time.

    • WTM Admin on May 8, 2021 at 1:55 pm

Absolutely Pauline, this is totally mind blowing and so urgently needed! As Jeremy Griffith writes in FREEDOM par 241, “while the crux question facing the human race, of the much-needed clarification of the nature of ‘good and evil’, does have an amazingly simple answer, the implications of it could not be more significant, far-reaching or exciting”! So there is a lot to ‘get your head around’ and we encourage you to explore our homepage—HumanCondition.com—which shows the ways to pursue your interest and get involved in our WTM Community to help share this critically important information.

This theory is definitely Freudian. And it is negative, since it points to man and woman as opposites.

    • WTM Admin on May 10, 2021 at 12:33 pm

Jeremy Griffith’s ‘instinct vs intellect’ explanation of the human condition is Freudian in the sense that it identifies humanity as suffering from a psychosis, but to heal it we needed to answer the essential question of why, when the ideals are to be loving and selfless, are we so competitive and selfish? It is this question of questions that Jeremy has solved and what is unique about his work. We finally have the ultimate scientific defence for our psychosis, which is the key element in providing true therapy to all humans. Our FAQs about men and women summarise how this explanation of humans allows us to finally understand the different roles men and women have historically taken up under the duress of the human condition, and bring peace to the war between the sexes.

Yes, your journey to the realisation that love/integrative meaning is the theme of existence has given you an appreciation of just how powerful the redeeming, reconciling and rehabilitating scientific explanation of the human condition is. 198. Franco on May 5, 2021 at 5:00 pm

Wow this is such a fascinating perspective on the human condition. So, Is there a beginning and an end to the human condition going forward in terms of the ways scientific and religious groups that are looking at these findings that you have explained about the human condition?

    • WTM Admin on May 13, 2021 at 9:41 am

As THE Interview explains, the human condition has been a terrifying subject (as it is the issue of whether we are fundamentally good or bad as a species) and we have necessarily lived in denial of it. So until it could be solved science took a mechanistic denial-based approach and religions were the custodians of the ideals to provide shelter and support during the psychologically upsetting search for liberating knowledge was underway. Now with Jeremy Griffith’s denial-free, holistic instinct vs intellect treatise, the polarities of life, including science and religion, can be reconciled and we can begin to heal and bring about a new, transformed world, free of suffering, for everyone! See our FAQ 1.2 about mechanistic science and FAQ 6.3 about the role of religion. It is now just a matter of getting these understandings into the mainstream, which is underway as you can see from the outstanding commendations Jeremy’s work has received from thought leaders in the domains of science and theology on our homepage.

It is unfortunate that the author feels that he his work has had to endure a huge amount of persecution (P267). From my own reading of the free version [of FREEDOM], I think the text would benefit from removing the many references to popular culture, from much less use of typographical emphasis – bold text, underlining, italics etc. and from judicious editing.

    • WTM Admin on May 10, 2021 at 12:11 pm

With regard to the persecution that Jeremy Griffith and the WTM have been subjected to, as FAQ 1.22 explains, FREEDOM simply records what happened in the interest of truth. It’s critically important to stand up to dishonesty and ill-treatment and call it out for what it is. Also, we suggest FAQ 1.16 which answers the question of ‘Surely this material needs some serious editing’.

    • WTM Admin on May 4, 2021 at 1:50 pm

Thanks for your wonderfully open comment Veronica! Wondering why you haven’t heard this before is a common sentiment which can cause initial frustration because, as you say, this is the most wonderful information—the ‘total’ defence of our condition—and everyone should have the benefit of that from day one. And it is difficult to absorb finally having this information in our lives when we are so variously traumatised by living under the duress of the human condition. However, the answer to all our problems is the Transformed State, which you can read about in FAQ 4.1. We also encourage you to explore our homepage at HumanCondition.com to see the ways to pursue your interest, including after THE Interview, watching our Introductory Videos 1-4 & 14 and joining our WTM Community to help us share this precious knowledge so that future generations don’t have to grow up without it!

Has he derived everything from her? Or is it any different.

    • WTM Admin on May 5, 2021 at 9:34 am

There are certainly thinkers like Hannah Arendt who have touched on aspects of the human condition, in particular about ways to better live under its duress, but for genuine progress to be made we needed to answer the essential question of why, when the ideals are to be loving and selfless, are we so competitive and selfish? It is this question of questions that biologist Jeremy Griffith has solved with his instinct vs intellect explanation and what is unique about his work. The following comment was made by an appreciative reader: “Hannah Arendt out. Jeremy Griffith in [Arendt is considered one of the most important political philosophers of the 20th century]. A couple of years ago my interest in the human condition was awoken by the skilled writer Hannah Arendt [who wrote the book The Human Condition]. Probably, because of a lack of diligence in my interpreting classical language, her work left me with a whetted appetite but in reality with a hole in my side (wanting). Today, Jeremy’s woken me up to what I’ve felt all along.” (See our Online Endorsements which are a selection of online comments from the general public about Jeremy’s treatise.)

So what?????? How are you going to do anything about this? Book sales?! Seems very commercial and self serving.

    • WTM Admin on May 3, 2021 at 5:06 pm

The WTM is a not-for-profit organisation and make all our publications, subscription and membership freely available on this website—HumanCondition.com—so this is not a money making venture.
In THE Interview Jeremy answers the question of, ‘if the ‘instinct vs intellect’ explanation is so obvious, why weren’t we taught this at school?’; and similarly our FAQ 1.14 explains that the answer to the question of, ‘if these ideas are so important why haven’t people heard of them?’, is that the human condition has historically been an off-limits subject, and as a result people can find it difficult to take in or ‘hear’ discussion of it; others can even become hostile to opening the whole arena. FAQ 1.14 further explains that the explanation of the human condition isn’t mainstream yet because the subject of the human condition is an anathema for mechanistic science; which is also why we have had to establish an independent organisation that, amongst other things, uses advertising to offer people the opportunity to look into this knowledge.
Your subconscious acceptance of what was being explained makes sense because despite our competitive and selfish behaviour we have always intuitively believed we were fundamentally good, but we have never been able to explain this contradictory, troubled nature. We are now able to explain it from first principle biology, and that is the great scientific breakthrough Jeremy’s work presents. This is the redeeming, reconciling explanation of the human condition that establishes our goodness and puts an end to the need for our defensive angry egocentric and alientated behaviour. Indeed, only the psychosis-addressing-and-solving, real explanation of the human condition can stop the destruction of our world and the disintegration of society that is happening everywhere we look and knowing that is what motivates the WTM and its supporters. See our FAQ 1.6 ‘Why this solves everything’ and FAQ 1.13 ‘Is this new’.

  226. Byron Varvarigos on April 30, 2021 at 12:51 am

Not factual to claim no animals except humans have conscious minds. Many animals are capable of thinking things through. This has been documented in apes, other primates, mammals and birds. Of course much behavior in animals and humans is mainly determined subconsciously. In humans, explanations of behaviors, beliefs and attitudes are often mere rationalizations for subconscious decisions. “One can will, but one cannot will what one wills.” “Life happens, and then we make up stories about it.” Dr Griffith’s moralistic mythical explanations sadly are irrelevant to explaining and changing behavior.

    • WTM Admin on May 3, 2021 at 4:19 pm

One of the great outstanding mysteries of science is ‘what is consciousness, and how did it emerge?’ Jeremy Griffith explains in THE Interview that consciousness simply means being sufficiently aware of how experiences are related to attempt to manage change from a basis of understanding. Clearly while other animals have various levels of ‘awareness’, none can consciously manage events like humans can, and so it is accurate to describe humans as the only animals possessing fully conscious minds. It is also worth noting that Jeremy explains that developing consciousness depended on overcoming the competitive, selfish ‘animal condition’ and becoming orientated to selflessness, so if a species is still preoccupied with selfish, competitive dominance, as other animals are, they can’t become fully conscious. We recommend our FAQ 5.4 titled ‘What is consciousness? / Why is it that humans became conscious while other animals haven’t? / How did consciousness emerge in humans?’
Importantly, as explained in THE Interview, the emerging conscious mind came into conflict with our pre-established instincts, with the result being our upset angry, egocentric and alienated human condition. You can read more about the ‘instinct vs intellect’ explanation of the human condition in FAQ 1.3.
Human behaviour has been dictated by subconscious elements, but with the redeeming explanation of the human condition now found, we can now admit that the main subconscious element in human life has been our denial of the human condition. Until we could solve the human condition we could not change this dominant subconscious element of having to prove our self-worth that underpinned all aspects of our behaviour.
Finally, the ‘instinct vs intellect’ explanation of the human condition is fully accountable, rational, based-in-first-principles science – see FAQ 1.20.

I am a ‘scientist’ by both nature and training; but have always been obsessed with the philosophical understanding of the ‘human condition’. Wishfully wanting the ability to understand. So much more to unravel!

    • WTM Admin on April 28, 2021 at 2:15 pm

Great to learn you are now reading FREEDOM Jerry. Yes, this understanding does deeply resonate with our intuitive belief that we are fundamentally good despite our competitive and selfish behaviour. What you will discover, as you read on, is Jeremy Griffith unravels the seemingly insoluble confusion of human life by biologically explaining our contradictory behaviour which has the power to transform the world as Freedom Essay 15 summarises.

Looks good, but idealistic in nature

    • WTM Admin on April 27, 2021 at 7:30 pm

Jeremy Griffith’s work is not an idealistic plea for the world to just be cooperative, rather it is a first-principle biological explanation for why we haven’t been cooperative. It is only with the intellect defended for why it had to defy our ‘idealistic’ instincts and become ‘realistic’, that the cooperative world becomes possible, or even legitimate. What is so significant about this breakthrough is with our fundamental goodness established we can at last reconcile our instinct and intellect or idealism and realism. In fact, we can now see that while the critical search for knowledge was ongoing realism was actually more ideal than idealism (see FAQ 7.2). Certainly there is habituation to overcome, but all Jeremy’s writings on the Transformed State that is now possible, explains how real change is immediately open to us all, see his Freedom Essay 15 How everyones lives can now be transformed.

  240. Jana Tupcova on April 26, 2021 at 2:41 pm

I am not entirely sure about this scientific evidence. There are multiple factors which can lead to different behaviour in humans. I believe our behaviour is driven in which enviroment we are growing (loving, grace, mindfull or opposite impatient, dictatorship, lack of compassion etc). What kind of enviroment parents grow and what leadership their grown in and any past trauma. Toxicity acumulation in our body can leads to psychological disturbance same as malnourished by reaching for imbalance diet.

    • WTM Admin on April 28, 2021 at 11:51 am

What you’re saying about the importance of the nurturing environment is true, Jana. As Jeremy Griffith explains in par 983 of FREEDOM, “the whole so-called ‘nature vs. nurture’ debate has really been about wanting to, indeed needing to, attribute the formation of our character to the influence of ‘nature’, our genetic make-up, rather than to the confronting truth of the role nurturing (or the lack thereof) played; it has been a sophisticated deflection from the fact that our psychoses and neuroses and their many physical manifestations are not about our genes, but the hurt to our all-loving instinctive self or soul during infancy and childhood.” However, what Jeremy has presented with his ‘instinct vs intellect’ explanation of the human condition is the source of all of this dysfunction and thus the key to ending it all. The significance nurturing has played in human development is summarised in this fascinating FAQ 5.2 ‘How did we acquire our moral soul?’. Also, for the scientific evidence for this treatise see FAQ 1.20.

Hi, Great work. Right, all of us we need to change… From inside.. And actually this is what all holy books of all religions are trying to say… But looks like no one is understanding well.. They are all a book of life… Its our guide book. In each and every thing there is a guide book.

    • WTM Admin on April 26, 2021 at 2:22 pm

The purpose of religion was to be the custodian of the ideal state while the search for liberating knowledge was underway. To change we needed to understand our behaviour—understand why when the ideals are to be loving and selfless, are we so competitive and selfish? It is this age-old question that biologist Jeremy Griffith has answered with this instinct vs intellect explanation. For the first time we can understand every aspect of human behaviour in ourself and in everyone else, and most importantly our behaviour changes naturally as a result, which you can learn all about on our Transformation page. Also our FAQs about the demystification of religion may be of interest.

This book is like the “small key” I’ve been looking for to make my experience of life complete.
I’ve been meditating for 45 years now. A wonderful, precise experience of real love and real peace inside of me. Yet, once back in the tumult of every day life, there was such a gap between the marvel of the experience of this specific meditation practice, and the shock of the “come back” in the hustle and bustle a common day…and the absolute impossibility to deal with the huge gap between experiencing heaven, and fighting with the daily problems of life…like having the two legs in two boats, how to keep the balance

    • WTM Admin on April 24, 2021 at 3:15 pm

That’s wonderful feedback Danielle. Practices such as meditation have been invaluable tools in helping us cope with the upset human condition, calm the troubled mind and soul of humans, but, as you say, fail to produce a lasting solution. Fundamentally they are about escaping the pain in our brains, rather than confronting and solving the pain at its source which Jeremy’s treatise does. Our conscious minds needed reconciling understanding of our conflicted selves (the core issue of the human condition) to truly heal and re-unite with our all-sensitive, loving soul. Yes at last we have the key to the transformation we so long for and deserve, see FAQ 6.5 about the important difference in these approaches.

This breakthrough instinct versus intellect explanation of the human condition (which Video/Freedom Essay 3 further explains) finally provides the biological understanding for why we are so messed up and ridden with guilt and shame—why we are divisively rather than cooperatively behaved. With our dark side truthfully explained and defended we can finally love ourselves and begin to heal and bring about a new, transformed world, free of suffering, for ourselves and future generations which you can learn all about on our Transformation page.

    • WTM Admin on April 25, 2021 at 1:03 pm

The astonishing claims being made about Jeremy Griffith’s work warrant initial scepticism however they can be verified as what Jeremy presents is all first principle-based, testable, biological understanding of the human condition which has attracted the support of eminent scientists and thinkers (see our homepage and FAQ 1.9 ‘Should people be sceptical about claims’). With regard to Alan Watts, there are certainly some thinkers who have touched on aspects of the human condition (and many who have simply tried to impose cooperation and selflessness upon us), but for genuine progress to be made we needed to answer the essential question of why, when the ideals are to be loving and selfless, are we so competitive and selfish? It is this question of questions that biologist Jeremy Griffith has solved with his instinct vs intellect explanation and what is unique about his work. Our FAQs about religion and the new age movement may be of interest in explaining the critical difference between such movements and the WTM.

A beautiful desire and hope for all of us. We are capable and intelligent enough to get better to reach this ultimate goal. For some reason, i have recently encountered people with narcissistic personality disorders. Never knew this was as prevalent a problem as it is; was never educated at home nor school about these kind of people. How can you incorporate them into such a meaningful life that you have discussed? Do you think their best instincts will overcome their most cynical behavior? If your discovery can heal this issue in society, then you definitely have an untapped goldmine. Sure hope most people in the world desire and honor your discovery rather than a few. Thank you for your commitment to mankind.

    • WTM Admin on April 21, 2021 at 2:00 pm

Thank you for your sincere feedback Agatha. Yes this understanding does heal narcissistic behaviour. Key to biologist Jeremy Griffith’s explanation is that to fulfil the great potential of our conscious mind we had to defy our cooperative moral instincts. This defiance or battle resulted in humans’ psychologically upset state and, in the extreme, that upset produces cynical and narcissistic behaviour. So we all suffer degrees of upset depending on our encounter with this battle. What is so utterly exonerating and psychologically healing about our ability to now understand this is that we can finally appreciate that there was a very good reason—indeed heroic reason—for our upset; and this applies to all humans, even those with extreme expressions of it. Importantly, as FAQ 4.2 explains, this doesn’t condone such behaviour, rather, through the power of compassionately understanding its source it subsides and disappears. You can also read more about destructive excessively egocentric power addicted behaviour in FREEDOM ch 8:16D, see especially par. 1003. And Jeremy further elaborates on this need for power and domination in Freedom Essay 62 where he gives a presentation overviewing the entire human journey and explaining how this understanding makes possible the real therapy and rehabilitation of the human race. So this certainly is a “goldmine” of knowledge that heals us all and opens up the most gloriously meaningful life possible which you can learn all about on our Transformation and Community pages.

  278. Craig Walter on April 16, 2021 at 9:13 pm

It has some merit but is too superficial a look at the human condition. There are at least two essential problems. The first is that knowingly and unknowingly humans are seeking limitlessness. In doing so they abide by cultural norms or in today’s society the pursuit of happiness through material accquisition. This is fuelled by capitalism and under communist type of regimes. This happiness is temporal. ONly by seeking the Infinite or Supreme self is there real realisation and satiation. People have reactive momenta like the laws of physics and there will always be a struggle between the negative and positive factors between the immoralists and the moralist. Society is governed by a warrior, intellectual, commercial and manual working class that coexist. This operates through a social cycle.

    • WTM Admin on April 16, 2021 at 4:58 pm

Thank you for your honesty Victoria. The human condition—the question of are we fundamentally good or bad—has been the most important, but also the most fearful, of subjects so your trepidation is justified. Now that question is answered, as it is in THE Interview, the subject becomes safe and not just safe but gloriously freeing of our mind and soul! We no longer have to live in denial of this subject and can know rather than not know as you say! We recommend re-watching the presentation, especially Part 4, where Jeremy discusses just how liberating this knowledge is: “being finally able to understand that we are good and not bad is what brings us the greatest psychological relief of all…at last we can…reconcile and heal our split selves.” Also, in the concluding chapter 9 of his book FREEDOM, Jeremy describes how this explanation is able to immediately transform all humans from their human-condition-afflicted, tortured existence to a fabulous life free of the human condition!

  282. Peter on April 16, 2021 at 4:27 am

Nonsense. These guys have no clue what “human condition” is.

  283. Iain Franklin on April 15, 2021 at 1:26 am

    Hello
Very well done. Very clear, very coherent, very concise and very compelling.
Can I ask a question please?
Where does our concept of a deity and a divine fit in with this please?

I hope you don’t mind me asking, only I noticed the only mention of God was when the presenter thanked god for knowing human’s can be free.

Belief in a divine seems to be a significant element of the human condition for many around the world and a source of much division between them that have differing beliefs. Does this understanding you are sharing enable us to become comfortable relinquishing our concept of a divine deity and so take responsibility for creating our own utopia here on Earth?

Does the value of this understanding come from the inherent and intrinsic validity and quality of the understanding itself or is its goodness and rightness underwritten by something greater than the human mind?

Should we be thanking god for this or the human mind which conceived and shared it so well?
    Thank you either way.

    • WTM Admin on April 15, 2021 at 1:27 pm

We welcome your questions Iain. The human condition is the study of humans’ capacity for acts of both so-called ‘good and evil’. It’s the realm of inquiry where science and religion overlap, so in explaining the human condition religion is demystified and explained. Religion and God are briefly discussed in this summary presentation, for instance Jeremy Griffith explains God is the Negative-Entropy-driven integrative meaning of existence and refers the audience to chapter 4 of his book FREEDOM. Until we could explain our divisive, competitive and selfish human condition we couldn’t afford to demystify ‘God’ and admit the truth that ‘God’ is our personification of the Negative-Entropy-driven, integrative, cooperative theme or purpose or meaning of existence. We couldn’t very well confront ‘God’ while we couldn’t explain why we have seemingly been so ‘unGodly’ and therefore we have needed an abstract, divine deity version of ‘God’. Jeremy’s work doesn’t contradict the Bible it simply brings biological understanding to all those pre-scientific concepts so it is 100% logic driven. We recommend FAQ 6.2 ‘What is God’ and FAQ 6.3 ‘Does this undermine religion/God’.

I want to site one book that say the opposite of what this psychiatrist is saying. The 3 pound universe hundreds of scientist have participated in that book one way or the another . The reptilian brain the mammalian brain and the neocortex. Most if not all of human aggression springs from the reptilian brain , our tendencies and propensity towards aggression. To say biology has nothing to do with negative behaviors is amazing

    • WTM Admin on April 15, 2021 at 1:36 pm

In THE Interview Jeremy Griffith addresses the almost universal excuse for our angy, egocentric and alienated behaviour, which is that it is due to savage instincts within us. This ‘savage instincts’ excuse is explained further in Freedom Essay 14.
It is also worth noting that American neurologist Paul MacLean’s theory of ‘the triune brain’—which features in the 1986 book, The Three-Pound Universe by J. Hooper and D. Teresi, and which states that humans are a mentally unbalanced species due to an inadequate coordination between our emotional old brain and our cognitive new brain—is addressed in Freedom Essay 4. It discusses that while many have identified the elements of instinct and intellect involved in creating the human condition, the biological breakthrough Jeremy’s treatise provides is the clarifying explanation of the nature of the conflict between them and explains without that explanation the conflict could not be resolved. This key biological distinction reveals our aggressive behaviour comes from the conscious-mind-based, psychologically troubled human condition, not the genetic-opportunism-based, animal condition or our reptilian brain.

  289. Russel Brewty on April 14, 2021 at 8:03 am

Even though I agree nurturing plays a major roll in the establishment of morals in humans and I believe that commerce driven feminism killed that future possibility. This theory does not explain the prevalence of violence and war in the recent human history and its demise over the past 100 years, which I hoped was the affect of civilisation.

    • WTM Admin on April 22, 2021 at 4:53 pm

Thank you for your comment Russel. Jeremy Griffith’s treatise explains that the longer humanity’s heroic search for knowledge has gone on, the more psychologically upset humanity became. It therefore follows that the further back in time you go, the less upset (and therefore the less violence and war) there was, ultimately leading back to an original, perfectly innocent, ‘golden age’ some 4 million years ago (an age religious scripture and philosophers such as Plato and Hesiod acknowledge).
With regard to apparent drops in levels of violence and war over the last 100 years, presumably since the end of WWII more effective communication technology and the development of more lethal weapons such as nuclear weapons may have stopped world wars occurring, but the level of violence and destruction has not really abated. Overall, as upset increased it eventually reached a level where we had no choice but to civilize or restrain it. However, being more civilised does not indicate that levels of psychological upset are now falling. As Jeremy says in THE Interview, “While we have learnt to significantly restrain and conceal—‘civilise’ as we refer to it—the phenomenal amount of upset within us, under the surface we all must be boiling with rage, and sometimes, when our restraint can no longer find a way to contain it, that anger must express itself—hence our capacity for shocking acts of cruelty, sadism, hate, murder and war.”
Yes, as long as the search for knowledge continued, levels of upset could only keep increasing. Only the redeeming explanation of the human condition could end that progression toward terminal alienation. We recommend reading Freedom Essay 55: Endgame for the human race to understand just how psychologically upset the human race now is.
With regard to nurturing, it has been humanity’s necessary preoccupation with proving its self-worth that has compromised our ability to nurture, not commerce driven feminism. However, with the human condition now explained, that preoccupation ends, and nurturing will again become humanity’s central focus. You can read more about the impact of the human condition on our ability to nurture in Chapter 8:16C of Jeremy’s book FREEDOM.

Great interview but how do you stop the global elites

    • WTM Admin on April 14, 2021 at 6:38 pm

The power of this explanation takes time to absorb, but the more you absorb it, the more you realise how all-solving of our need for power and domination it is. As Jeremy Griffith explains in Part 4 of THE Interview while we lacked the real defence of understanding our corrupted condition, we absolutely needed the artificial defence and reinforcement of seeking power, fame, fortune and glory but now our fundamental goodness has been established that way of living is obsolete. In his definitive book FREEDOM, par 1232, Jeremy writes about how quickly this information will repair the world: “Importantly, the more this understanding and associated transformation catches on, the easier it will be for people to move from the old insecure, ego-centric way of living to the new, secure, ego-less way of living. The egocentric way of living has had such a powerful hold on humans because without understanding of the human condition all that we had was the superficial reinforcement we gained from seeking power, fame, fortune and glory, but now that relieving understanding has been found then that old egocentric way of living will quickly lose its power—so quickly, in fact, that everyone will be amazed by how swiftly their need for and attachment to the old artificial forms of reinforcement falls away.” And this transformation is happening! On our homepage you can see the rapidly growing appreciation and support for the WTM with outstanding commendations from thought leaders and WTM Centres all over the world!

    • WTM Admin on April 12, 2021 at 6:48 pm

The fundamental problem the human race has always had is to explain or justify our competitive, selfish and aggressive behaviour – all the evidence seemed to suggest that we were evil. We’re we not awakened to our partly savage nature that was lead by our instincts without the questioning nature of our conscious mind until it began to develop. Yes tribally we were loving and caring to a degree, which enabled us to live in groups, but our savageness kicked in with fear the fear of other tribes of differences and the unknown. We have now over many years developed to question these actions, which are in conflict with our tribal instincts of unity. Surely this makes more sense. And explains the conflict more today because to some degree tribalism is unacceptable, but not always as our leaders are choosing sides instead of find understanding on both sides and developing a balance for harmonious living.

    • WTM Admin on April 12, 2021 at 6:52 pm

Jeremy Griffith comprehensively addresses the theory of Multilevel Selection or New Theory of Eusociality that you describe in his definitive book FREEDOM, chapter 2:11. He explains this theory “not only contrives an explanation for our genuinely moral instincts, but takes the art of denial to the absolute extreme by contriving a non-human-condition-confronting explanation of the human condition itself!…the Multilevel Selection theory for eusociality misrepresents, in fact, avoids, the real, consciousness-derived, psychological aspect of the human condition.” Explanation of the human condition presents a massive paradigm shift in our thinking so we encourage you to read FREEDOM, especially chapter 2. Also our Freedom Essay 34 explains how finding understanding of the human condition brings an end to the whole now horrifically polarised world of politics.

Religion will never stand for the consciousness change. Who will believe symbology over fall from grace? Easy blame for not changing.

    • WTM Admin on April 9, 2021 at 8:47 am

Thank you for your thoughts James. We maintain that materialism, dogma and resistance to change are all symptoms of the underlying, deep insecurity in humans caused by the human condition. To save the world we have to address the source of the human condition and to do that we need to answer the essential question of why, when the ideals are to be loving and selfless, are we so competitive and selfish, and needing of so much relief from materialism? It is this question of questions that biologist Jeremy Griffith has solved with his instinct vs intellect explanation and why this interview is being described as “the most important interview of all time”.

Lose yourself to find yourself… This is a known tenet… But who actually apply thus…?

A good talk and introspection into our humanity… How to implement this “transformation”.. This is also a big question.. It resembles closely what Mr. Wim Hof says “We are being brainwashed at school..in a framework telling us to be agressive, mean, bad.. if we want to succeed…” … sounds very similar….

    • WTM Admin on April 8, 2021 at 1:21 pm

Solving the human condition required finding the clarifying difference between the way the intellect and instincts work, and that is the great breakthrough that Jeremy Griffith has found. Having now finally found the explanation for why we had to challenge our instincts, all our defensive and insecure upset anger, egocentricity and alienation can subside and heal. Understanding relieves and replaces the need to be defensive and insecure and we can legitimately return to a selfless way of living. This is the rapidly transforming effect of being able to understand the human condition. We suggest our FAQ 1.13 Is this idea original and FAQ 1.4 How our lives can be transformed

WAAW!!! Very knew [new] for me!! But I can follow a bit. Very good to know that we are not that bad and that we can heal humanity. My mind must stilletjes [quietly, translated from Dutch] onderstand this very interesting theme.

  328. Petra Haegebaert on April 8, 2021 at 5:03 am

There is onderstand a difference between animals and human concieous [conscience]. As I onderstand it correct: it is because of a kind of psychological trauma that we started to fight with our concieous [conscience] and afterwards that we started to create an ego to justify what we are doing and why???

    • WTM Admin on April 8, 2021 at 12:53 pm

Yes Petra! Jeremy Griffith explains the key biological distinction is that humans suffer from the conscious-mind-based, psychologically troubled human condition, not the genetic-opportunism-based, animal condition. And, most importantly, this psychosis can be healed with understanding—a revelation that transforms the human race! We encourage you to pursue your interest on our homepage where all our key books and videos are freely available. This is brilliant but I fear that what we as humans have learnt over the millions of years may not be unlearnt, especially the idea that some humans are superior to others which has generated the deep seated hatred against some aboriginal people. How does this new explanation of human condition intend to resolve this and create a better world for all human. The events of recent years and the rise of the far right is a testament that we have a lot of work to do, and it appears daunting.

    • Tony M on April 6, 2021 at 2:33 pm

Thanks for your interest Chuks and yes, as Jeremy Griffith explains the world is facing the terrifying end play threat of terminal levels of psychosis which is certainly daunting. Jeremy’s breakthrough instinct vs intellect explanation allows us to understand why the horror of racism has existed under the duress of the human condition and, most importantly, finally brings it to an end. To quote par 297 of his book FREEDOM: “Significantly, now that we are able to understand from scientific first principles that upset is not an ‘evil’, worthless, bad state, but an immensely heroic state, we can know that while, inevitably, all humans are variously upset from their different encounters with, and degrees of engagement in, humanity’s epic search to find knowledge, ALL HUMANS ARE EQUALLY GOOD. Everyone is variously angry, egocentric and alienated, but everyone is good, and not just good but a hero of the story of life on Earth! No longer does humanity have to rely on dogmatic assertions that ‘all men are created equal’ purely on the basis that it is a ‘self-evident’ truth, as the United States’ Declaration of Independence asserts, because we can now explain, understand and know that the equality of goodness of all humans is a fundamental truth.” (Emphasis is as appears in FREEDOM.)
Now we can understand the human condition we can see that no person or race is superior or inferior. This desperately needed reconciling understanding of the relationship between races is further explained in Freedom Essay 28 and for a testimonial on the power of this information to end racism, we recommend watching/reading the presentation from Franklin Mukakanga, of Zambia, in Video/Freedom Essay 8.

    • WTM Admin on April 7, 2021 at 12:17 pm

The absolutely astonishing claims being made about biologist Jeremy Griffith’s work warrant initial extreme scepticism and further the realm of the human condition is the most ‘muddied of pools’ with deluded charlatans everywhere. However what Jeremy is presenting is all first principle-based, rational, testable, biological understanding of the human condition which has attracted the support of eminent scientists and thinkers (see our homepage). There is no hidden agenda, dogma, faith or belief involved. It’s all about knowledge that either stacks up or it doesn’t—and if it doesn’t you should throw it over your shoulder and reject it. These FAQs may be of interest: 1.2 How does mechanistic science currently explain the human condition, 1.20 What scientific evidence does Jeremy’s work have and 6.1 Is this a religion.

Could be the answer to the theory of nature versus nurture…born with instincts… What stage of life does a human develop a conscious mind?

    • WTM Admin on April 7, 2021 at 12:24 pm

Yes, Jeremy Griffith’s work does explain the nature versus nurture debate! As he talks about in THE Interview we are born with loving instincts and the ‘savage instincts’ explanation was just a convenient excuse while we searched for the psychosis-addressing-and-solving real explanation of our divisive behaviour. As Jeremy explains in chapter 8:16C of FREEDOM, “the whole so-called ‘nature vs. nurture’ debate has really been about wanting to, indeed needing to, attribute the formation of our character to the influence of ‘nature’, our genetic make-up, rather than to the confronting truth of the role nurturing (or the lack thereof) played; it has been a sophisticated deflection from the fact that our psychoses and neuroses and their many physical manifestations are not about our genes, but the hurt to our all-loving instinctive self or soul during infancy and childhood.”
With regard to when we become conscious in chapter 8:2 of FREEDOM Jeremy explains our individual consciousness necessarily charts the same course that our species’ consciousness has taken as a whole which is absolutely fascinating. He explains the conscious mind broke free of the influence of the instincts and took over management of events which occurred at an ever increasing rate from the beginning of childhood. For example the early australopithecines (from 3.9 to 3 million years ago) equate to children between the ages of 4 to 6 and obviously there are degrees of consciousness prior to that.

    • WTM Admin on April 2, 2021 at 3:50 pm

This understanding explains that the tragic cost of the search for knowledge was that we became psychologically angry, egocentric and alienated. Indeed it has been a long, terrible journey of over 2 million years since we first became conscious and the search for knowledge began, and during that time humanity became so psychologically upset that atrocities such as murder could be, and certainly have been, committed. However, the journey is now over; we have finally found the scientific explanation of the human condition that redeems and liberates humanity. • WTM Admin on March 31, 2021 at 5:40 pm

Maternalism is a genetically selfish activity, but Jeremy is not saying maternalism accounts for the love human mothers feel for their children. In Part 3 of the THE Interview, he explains that it was because maternalism is a genetically selfish activity that love indoctrination was able to become established in our distant ancestors millions of years ago. However, and very importantly, once love indoctrination became established, mothers began to actively love their children. The extraordinarily nurturing bonobos demonstrate this transition from selfish instinctive behaviour to the beginning of genuine love. You can read more about love indoctrination in Freedom Essay 21 and chapter 5 of FREEDOM.

Humanity’s ability to nurture has been severely compromised by the human condition, but now that all our preoccupied behaviour has been defended by the explanation of the human condition, we can now safely acknowledge the absolute importance of nurturing in the development of children – see chapter 8:16C of FREEDOM on ‘The dire consequences of terminal levels of alienation destroying our ability to nurture our children’.

    • WTM Admin on March 30, 2021 at 11:51 am

Thanks Livia, yes, with our psychologically upset now defended, it is now safe to admit that our human instincts are loving and cooperative, that is our natural state – see Part 3 of THE Interview; and in Part 4, it is explained how, with the human condition now solved, all humans will be able to return to that non-upset ideal state we’ve longed for, be it Paradise, Eden, Nirvana, Utopia, Shangri-La or whatever term we ever-hopeful humans ascribed to it, but we will return to it with understanding, in a fully conscious way. As the poet T.S. Eliot anticipated, ‘We shall not cease from exploration and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time’ (Little Gidding, 1942).

    • WTM Admin on March 30, 2021 at 11:41 am

Jeremy Griffith’s treatise on the human condition, which is summarised here in THE Interview, explains that the longer an individual human, or even a ‘race’ (ethnic group) of humans, was exposed to the great battle that humanity has been heroically waging against ignorance, the more they would suffer from the upset state of the angry, egocentric and alienated human condition. While it is true that some Western ‘races’ have been more exposed to the battle than some other, more sheltered ‘races’, it is not correct to say that the human condition is a Western condition – all humans are now part of the extremely upset stage of humanity, H. sapiens sapiens, and are, therefore, nowhere near as innocent as humans were some 2 million years ago when the battle of the human condition first emerged. All humans are now variously angry, egocentric and alienated due to the human condition. We recommend you read Freedom Essay 28: The end of racism.

  370. Rita MacDonald on March 29, 2021 at 3:58 am

Interesting interview, as I was born in 1939 I had been brought up with the original sin permeating all humans. As an adult I disbelieved this and thought as many have, that we are all good, every day! How different is that from your podcast? Thank you, Rita

    • WTM Admin on March 30, 2021 at 11:45 am

In Part 2 of THE Interview, Jeremy explains that the pre-scientific story of Adam and Eve was “wrong” in the sense that “Adam and Eve [i.e. us humans] are actually not just good but the heroes of the whole story of life on Earth”. He goes on to elaborate that “what this real — and actually very obvious — instinct vs intellect explanation of the human condition fundamentally does is lift the ‘burden of guilt’ from the human race. It establishes that we humans are good and not bad after all. While we are all inevitably variously angry, egocentric and alienated from our different encounters with humanity’s heroic battle to find knowledge, ultimately self-knowledge, understanding of our corrupted condition, we can now know that every human is fundamentally good.” We encourage looking at the Introductory Videos on the WTM homepage because the more you do absorb this explanation, the more you realise just how all-clarifying, all-redeeming, all-reconciling, all-healing, all-liberating it is!

    • Alex on March 30, 2021 at 7:52 am

I’m not entirely sure I understand the entire thesis, however it seems to suggest that evolutionary science dictates that Homo sapiens must be forever dominated by a hyper individualistic dog eat dog mentality. A sort of Hobbesian war of everyone against everyone. However as a student of evolutionary science and a clinician I’m well aware that individual egos can be sublimated in the furtherance of shared and altruistic goals, the problem being that this reciprocity is rather easily directed into the furtherance of goals that are both selfish or destructive or both. History resounds with the clash of sabres of groups, tribes, nations, that had superlative ingroup compassion and rabid hatred for the outgroup. I may well be getting the wrong end of the stick here but if so it’s at least partly because of the professors repetition of “dog eat dog” mentality

      • WTM Admin on March 31, 2021 at 8:30 am

Thanks for your comment Alex. Jeremy explains that our selfish and aggressive behaviour is not instinctive, rather it is psychological in origin, the result of a clash between our emerging conscious mind, and pre-established loving instincts. Most importantly, psychoses can be healed with understanding, so that’s the importance of the psychosis-addressing-and-solving, explanation of the human condition presented in THE Interview — it brings a complete and permanent end to our insecurity-driven destructive behaviour, completely transforming all humans into secure and happy beings.

In the whole human condition of billions of years there never was a period that needed more wisdom than the time we are living in now. However, the mass is dictating and I have little confidance that it will turn out in the right direction after all.

    • WTM Admin on March 27, 2021 at 1:31 pm

It is true that this breakthrough wisdom has arrived at the 11th hour! And as with any new scientific breakthrough in history it may take time for people to realise this is what it says it is but once this catches on — through people recognising the importance of it — the infectious enthusiasm and selfless love it liberates will spread like wildfire. And it really is the universal solution to all the problems we face! For the growing momentum of support that is already building around the world for Jeremy’s breakthrough explanation of the human condition, see our FAQ on our ever-expanding network of WTM Centres, and please read FAQs 1.4–1.6 and chapter 9:9 of Jeremy’s definitive book FREEDOM for more on the speed in which this knowledge can turn humanity in the right direction and transform it.

    • WTM Admin on March 27, 2021 at 8:35 am

The human condition has been such a deeply, deeply tragic journey full of so much unthinkable pain and suffering, especially for children, it really is almost too much to bare. What is so significant about Jeremy Griffith’s explanation of the human condition is we no longer have to be burdened by the fundamental question of whether we are good or bad because our core goodness as individuals and as a species has been biologically established. We can understand humans’ psychological upset was the price humans had to pay for searching for knowledge and that the human story presents the greatest, most heroic story ever told. We can know what happened to us as infants was not because we weren’t good enough or that we were unlovable but rather it was the result of the human condition. So we can bring great compassion and kindness to ourselves and others and we don’t have to overly confront the upset within us (as FAQ 1.19 summarises). Also our FAQs 1.4 – 1.6 and chapter 9:9 of Jeremy’s definitive book FREEDOM explain just how quickly this knowledge can transform the world.

Certainly there has been a recognition in literature (and by profound thinkers generally) that there must be something better than our current human condition afflicted state. However many people have deluded themselves that this liberated state could be achieved through people artificially restraining, sublimating and even transcending their upset, corrupted condition, but the truth is that this state could only be achieved by confronting, truthfully thinking about, and finally explaining and thus solving the human condition at its source, which is what Jeremy Griffith has done. In the end it was only getting to the bottom of it all, not transcendence, that could fulfil Richard Bach’s allegoral quest for perfection.

This has really opened my eyes and has given me answers about myself and the human race that I’ve been looking for. I’d accepted the reasons as to why we are the way we are and didn’t realise there might possibly be an alternative answer. I need to know more so I can understand myself better to make myself the best version of myself that I could possibly be. I’m not looking for perfection, though some changes in the right direction would be a step in the right direction for us all.
    Thank you

    • Robert Ferguson on March 25, 2021 at 11:39 am

The above analysis seeks place blame for negative human qualities and behaviors solely upon the conscious intellect and asserts the notion that human beings are by their biological nature exclusively kind and loving. This ignores the reality that humans have evolved to be a gregarious species and goes against conventional scientific thinking about the origins of human behavior. Humans can indeed be kind and loving, but this behavior is directed towards members of their group. Towards outsiders they can display great savagery and brutality, red in tooth and claw, just like the other beasts. Thus, people are adapted to be both kind and cruel, just like all other gregarious species. There was never a time when they were only one or the other. The human intellect, although it can come into conflict with natural tendencies, acts, for the most part, to fulfill instinctively felt needs, not to create them. The problem with the presented analysis is that it encourages the reader to believe that negative human traits and desires can be entirely eliminated correct thinking and self discipline. This is clearly false.

      • WTM Admin on March 26, 2021 at 2:25 pm

Jeremy Griffith’s ‘instinct vs intellect’ explanation of the human condition explains that we became psychologically upset sufferers of the angry, egocentric and alienated human condition as the unavoidable result of a clash between our pre-established instincts and emerging conscious mind. Jeremy explains in THE Interview that without this defence for our upset state we have sought to falsely blame our behaviour on ‘savage instincts’ within us. The ‘multi-level selection’ theory, which claims we have loving instincts for interactions within the group, and aggressive instincts for interactions outside the group, is a variant of this ‘savage instincts’ excuse, and is debunked in chapter 2.11 of FREEDOM. We suggest that with this true defence for our behaviour established, it is now possible to consider that there is clear evidence that humans developed from a cooperative and loving ancestor – of which the bonobos are a living model; you can read about the fossil evidence for this cooperative past in Freedom Essay 22.

        • Alex on March 30, 2021 at 8:03 am

I am far from convinced that the love indoctrination process would produce a perfectly benign, compassionate and beneficent offspring. I foresee an infant so raised becoming manipulative and entitled. Altruism requires a reciprocal interaction in which a negotiation produces a compromise.

          • WTM Admin on March 31, 2021 at 8:36 am

To read more about how the Love Indoctrination process produces genuinely cooperative and loving infants, which the bonobos evidence, please see chapter 5:4 of FREEDOM. As Jeremy explains, it would have been very easy for the process to break down; for example, he explains that one of the difficulties “with selecting for more maternal mothers is that their genes don’t tend to endure because their offspring tend to be the most selflessly behaved, too ready to put others before themselves, leaving the more aggressive, competitive and selfish individuals to take advantage of their selflessness. Such selfish opportunism could, however, be avoided if all members of the group were equally well nurtured with love, equally trained in selflessness—this situation being yet another of the delicate conditions that has to be maintained if love-indoctrination is to develop, for any breakdown in nurturing within a group that is in the midst of developing love-indoctrination could jeopardise the whole situation and see it revert to the old state of the ‘each-for-his-own’, opportunistic, all-out-competition-where-only-dominance-hierarchy-can-bring-some-peace, selfish-genes-rule, ‘animal condition’.”

There’s a lot to take in, think I will need to listen to it several times and read the book as it’s mind blowing! I’m confused about how Adam and Eve got blamed for everything and a lot more confused me too. I found the explanations confusing and incomplete but I so want to learn and understand more.

    • Annie on March 24, 2021 at 12:48 pm

The breakthrough explanation of the human condition presents a massive paradigm shift in our thinking so it’s natural to need to take time to digest all it reveals. As Jeremy Griffith describes, the human condition has historically been such a fearful, off-limits topic and the mind simply needs time to ride out the initial shock of having it broached and all manner of mystery unlocked. For instance, in Part 2 of THE Interview, Jeremy explains that the pre-scientific story of Adam and Eve was ‘wrong’ and that ‘Adam and Eve are actually not just good but the heroes of the whole story of life on Earth’. We encourage re-watching THE Interview and looking at the Introductory Videos on the WTM homepage because the more you do absorb this explanation, the more you realise just how all-clarifying, all-redeeming, all-reconciling, all-healing, all-liberating it is!

I feel like this information needs to be presented to everyone on the planet as quickly as possible. I mention it to most people I encounter and ask that they in turn tell at least 2 more people. Just think of how fast word spread on Covid19. We must also awaken spiritually in order to be better protected from future biological attacks. Our true divine nature is awakening and soon this evil will be changing its tune.

    • WTM Admin on March 24, 2021 at 12:09 pm

As Jeremy Griffith says in THE Interview, the power of cooperative selflessness that solving the human condition liberates will enable us to effectively deal with all the overwhelming problems that are burdening our world, and very quickly, because we will be able to effectively address challenges like pandemics as a collective by prioritising the needs of the greater whole. But it’s very important to point out that this explanation allows us to understand that even though we became immensely psychologically upset sufferers of anger, egocentricity and alienation for participating in humanity’s search for knowledge, we weren’t ‘evil’; in fact, humans are the heroes of the story of life on Earth. And it’s this knowledge that legitimately allows us to return to our natural loving, selfless and cooperative instincts, that ‘divine’ state you mention.

    • WTM Admin on March 23, 2021 at 12:31 pm

As Jeremy Griffith has written in one of his earlier books (A Species In Denial), “The demystification of our world doesn’t mean the specialness of our world is removed, rather it means the specialness is made more tangible. Mechanistic science, like all forms of denial, has largely been a process of stripping the beauty and truth from the world whereas the denial-free explanation of the world restores all that beauty and truth. It allows humans to live with a full awareness of, and ability to savour, the beauty of integration. It is alienation that is devoid of spirituality, not the truth.” You may also be interested in reading FAQ 6.2 which includes the answer to ‘Does the scientific explanation of ‘God’ really contain all the attributes of religion’s metaphysical ‘God’?

Certainly humanity has been trying all sorts of ways to therapise itself, but what is so unique about what Jeremy Griffith presents is that we finally have the ultimate scientific defence for our psychologically upset self, which is the key element in providing true therapy to all humans. As Jeremy says in Part 4 of THE Interview, “what this real—and actually very obvious—instinct vs intellect explanation of the human condition fundamentally does is lift the ‘burden of guilt’ from the human race. And this ability to understand and know there was a good reason why the human race became psychologically upset, is the key, relieving understanding we have been in search of ever since we became conscious some 2 million years ago and our corrupted condition emerged.”

Thank you for the videos. Not dogmatic. Neither a polítical propaganda, but a deep intuition of our true purpose. You should have given also a quotation of Dostoievsky…Great authors explored the “human condition” (Joseph Conrad too, or Leopoldo Lugones, etc). It is time to live the “humanities”, they had not been made only for “museums”!

    • Abi on March 22, 2021 at 4:56 pm

Yes these videos are just wonderful! I don’t know if you saw it, but there’s a stunning quote from Dostoevsky in Part 3 of The Interview that Jeremy uses to illustrate “our species’ bonobo-like time in an alienation-free, all-sensitive and all-loving state of innocence”. Just search ‘Dostoevsky’ above to find it under the picture of the bonobos lying on the grass. I do agree that the great authors have explored the human condition, which is why their work has resonated I imagine. I must say though, that Jeremy is forever citing profound quotes from authors and philosophers that I have not come across before. Have a look through Freedom’s index and you’ll be amazed by all the references!

    • WTM Admin on March 22, 2021 at 4:06 pm

What is explained in THE Interview is that the longer an individual human, or even a ‘race’ (ethnic group) of humans, was exposed to the great battle that humanity has been heroically waging against ignorance, the more they would suffer from the upset state of the angry, egocentric and alienated human condition. While it is true that some European ‘races’ have been more exposed to the battle than some other ‘races’, it is not correct to say that the human condition is a European condition – all humans are now part of the extremely upset stage of humanity, H. sapiens sapiens, and are, therefore, nowhere near as innocent as humans were some 2 million years ago when the battle of the human condition first emerged. We recommend you read Freedom Essay 28: The end of racism.

Grtz Mike Smith

    • WTM Admin on March 20, 2021 at 12:13 pm

It is true that while the corrupting search for knowledge was going on it was not possible to find a permanent balance between cooperation and selfishness. These fluctuations are evident in the action of democracy — as Jeremy Griffith writes in chapter 3.9 of FREEDOM, under democracy “the proper balance is sought between the need to maintain a degree of selfless, loving, soulful, cooperative ‘ideal’ behaviour for society to function, and the need for there to be sufficient freedom from the imposition of the expectation of such ‘ideal’ behaviour, for people to be able to carry on the corrupting search for knowledge.” It does take some time to digest, but what is so significant about this breakthrough is that we can at last reconcile instinct and intellect, idealism and realism, which does bring about true and lasting equilibrium.

    • WTM Admin on March 20, 2021 at 10:43 am

Yes, what was missing in all these attempts to delve into the problem of the human condition was the all-important clarifying, redeeming, reconciling and psychologically rehabilitating explanation for WHY the conflict between our instincts and our consciousness occurred. Until that was found, we humans couldn’t relieve ourselves of our psychologically upset state or condition.

Thanks Lysiane. Yes, in Part 3 of THE Interview, Jeremy explains that our human instincts are loving and cooperative — altruistic; that is our natural state. And in Part 4, he explains the reason why we had to defy those instincts and become angry, egocentric and alienated sufferers of the human condition, and in providing that redeeming, reconciling and transforming biological insight, humans will be able to return to that all-loving cooperative state, but this time in a fully knowing, conscious way.

Yes the allegory of Adam & Eve has been vastly misinterpreted for sure. If you take that story literally, it can make no sense. The fruit of knowledge was the introduction of the “Ego”of man.

    • WTM Admin on March 20, 2021 at 12:20 pm

Yes, Snowdon, this reconciling understanding of the human condition at last makes it possible to explain and demystify all mythology, including all the parables and stories in the Bible. Jeremy Griffith explains that the prophet Moses went as close as you could possibly go in those pre-scientific times to actually explain the human condition when he said “we took the fruit from the tree of knowledge [became conscious] and were disobedient [obviously meaning we developed a conscious free will that defied our already established instincts that had been controlling our lives] and became perpetrators of sin [sufferers of psychologically upset, divisive behaviour]”. All Moses lacked to fully explain the human condition was the scientific explanation of the difference between genes and nerves, which defends our ‘disobedience’. It is this explanation that finally allows us to understand that even though we became immensely psychologically upset sufferers of anger, egocentricity and alienation for participating in humanity’s search for knowledge, we weren’t ‘evil’; in fact, we are the heroes of the story of life on Earth!

  416. Honest Review on March 19, 2021 at 7:53 pm

This is a first step, not a fix like it is made out to be. You need to recognise and acknowledge the injustice before you can put it behind us. But this just skips that crucial step. It’s like making pasta, this is the pasta dough but you can’t get their without the eggs, flour, yolks, olive oil or salt. Once we can realise the crimes committed by majorities onto minorities fully is when this solution can become applicable and solve problems, until then your right wing solution to world peace won’t come to be. Also narcissism (NPD) is a massive cause for this so if you want to educate yourself on what I mean start with understanding what that is and why it is. Thank you for you time.

    • WTM Admin on March 20, 2021 at 12:18 pm

Thank you for your comment. As Jeremy acknowledges and explains throughout his work, the angry, egocentric and alienated human condition has caused immense brutality, pain and suffering between humans—between different sexes, religions, ethnicities, generations; it has been one long horror story. But what matters now is that we can, through the reconciling and redeeming and rehabilitating explanation of the human condition, finally understand the source of the psychological upset that drove those injustices and bring an end to it. For present generations this means we can at last be honest about all the horrors, because the human condition has been defended at its very source, and even more importantly, the human race can leave behind its whole upset history as compassionately dealt with. And this includes those with extreme states of egocentricity and narcissism, known as psychopaths or power addicts. Jeremy explains this power addicted state, particularly in men, in chapter 8:16D of FREEDOM. The significance and profundity of Jeremy’s explanation of the human condition takes some time to absorb, but the more you do absorb it, the more you realise just how all-redeeming, all-reconciling and all-liberating it is.

If natural selection has programmed our instincts why did we develop a self consciousness (intellect) since the latter would be in conflict with the instinct and then result in psychosis which is. a state that is destructive to our wellbeing.

    • WTM Admin on March 18, 2021 at 12:59 pm

Jeremy explains that the emergence of consciousness was a by-product of the ‘love indoctrination’ process, which allowed it to escape the blocks that all other animals have to its development (see FAQ 5.4: What is consciousness? / Why is it that humans became conscious while other animals haven’t? / How did consciousness emerge in humans?). And when consciousness did emerge and begin to exercise its power of self-management, yes it did come into conflict with our pre-establised instincts, which led to the psychologically upset state of the human condition.

Sounds like re-packaged Christianity without Christ. Best of luck

    • WTM Admin on March 18, 2021 at 1:01 pm

Unlike religions, which are based on faith or dogma, the understanding of the human condition is based on rational, first-principle-based biology; it is knowledge-driven. Please see our FAQs that clarify the difference between the work of Jeremy Griffith and the WTM, and religions.

Never heard anything so parochial and small minded in relation to the human condition with such high sounding claims. I mean off the claims weren’t so hyperbolic. It might have been considered interesting.
The claims were so high sounding at the end it was just stupid.

    • WTM Admin on March 20, 2021 at 12:16 pm

The absolutely astonishing claims made about Jeremy Griffith’s breakthrough explanation, such as it is the insight that will ‘solve the human condition and save the world’, do warrant initial extreme scepticism, but the amazing fact is that they all withstand scrutiny; a person can begin reading the explanation and the more they read into it the more they will realise the claims being made are actually true, and in time become appreciated for their forthright honesty in indicating where the solution to our problems lies. Read more in FAQ 1.9: Should people be sceptical about these claims.

This is the most positive, logic and uplifting message from the scientific community I have heard in a long long time. Especially in the very dark times, we are finding ourselves in right now.
This is a beacon of light, we all need to be a part of!❤️

I am drawn to this way of seeing ourselves & the world which has been alluded to previously from Moses & Plato to Bob Dylan. A call to quiet mass hysteria and collectively pull our socks up and walk forth – together?

Are we totally free of instinctual conditioning, is it possible to retrogress?

    • WTM Admin on March 16, 2021 at 12:49 pm

As is explained in THE Interview, humans’ angry, egocentric and alienated behaviour is the result of a psychosis, not due to savage instincts within us, and as Jeremy explains, “it is actually really good news that our behaviour is due to a conscious-mind-based psychologically troubled condition because psychoses can be healed with understanding. If our competitive and aggressive behaviour was due to us having savage instincts then we would be stuck with that born-with, hard-wired, innate behaviour.” You can read more about the false savage instincts excuse in FAQ 1.2.

A great way to look at, to see and understand the human condition… maybe all the better to see our potential and how we can achieve it!… together!

Watching that interview was revolutionising. Although I can’t stop thinking about how can we achieve this nearly impossible challenge of over coming and spreading the knowledge of the human condition? When we live in a world full of conflict and hate. I’m 17 and I live in Ireland, I want to help!

    • Ismail Noordien on March 16, 2021 at 7:41 am

      Very very informative

    • WTM Admin on March 15, 2021 at 2:30 pm

Hi Donall, what a wonderfully generous response! It may take time for people to realise that this breakthrough is what it says it is (as with any new scientific breakthrough in history), but once this catches on — through people recognising the importance of it — the infectious enthusiasm and selfless love it liberates will spread like wildfire. We recommend you look at our FAQs 1.4 – 1.6 and chapter 9:9 of Jeremy’s definitive book FREEDOM for more on just how quickly this knowledge can transform the world.
Your offer to help this all-important project is so appreciated. We have a guide here on our website for people who want to help and join the WTM, including subscribing to our mailing list, watching our key introductory material (including THE Interview, which you have done), reading FREEDOM, becoming a member and interacting with us. We have a thriving WTM Community with over 45 global WTM Centres and we have regular webinars and meetings to discuss this incredible transformation — see our WTM Community page. And we also have a World Transformation Movement Facebook Community, so feel free to join and share in the discussion, excitement and fellowship there and on our website!

Liberating, …taking away all of mankind’s prejudices that are tightly attached. Great stuff.

  449. Jay on March 15, 2021 at 1:51 am

This is a big enough issue that we need to worry about as a human race rather than manupulating & killing each other for no real reasons. It would be best to keep the natural & supernatural aspects separate due to various religious beliefs & faiths to move forward from where the human race has got up to over the last two million years! Simply because it would be much easier to get to the bottom if we keep the supernatural elements away from the core discovery!

    • WTM Admin on March 15, 2021 at 10:00 am

Yes, they are emotive topics, but as is explained in FAQ 1.15, the study of the human condition is the study of humans’ capacity for acts of both so-called ‘good and evil’—of why, when the ideals are to be cooperative loving and selfless are we capable of incredible aggression and selfishness. This realm of inquiry is where science and religion overlap, so naturally in explaining the human condition the terms ‘good and evil’ and religious references will be used, and through scientific explanation, finally demystified and reconciled.

  450. MM Joffe on March 14, 2021 at 9:46 pm

Bonobos are as they are because they live in a plentiful environment, as compared to chimpanzees. Does that not explain their disposition and behaviour?

    • WTM Admin on March 15, 2021 at 9:52 am

As Jeremy explains in chapter 6.8 of FREEDOM, being in a food-rich, relatively predator-and-competitor-free environment will not quell competition for mating opportunities. The only thing that can do that is the love-indoctrination process. So while the love-indoctrination process does require relatively ideal conditions to become established (see chapter 5:6 of FREEDOM), it is wrong to say that bonobos’ disposition and behaviour is explained by their environment alone.

  451. Jamie Duffy on March 14, 2021 at 5:33 pm

I found this so inspiring and uplifting. Given me understanding of hope for the human condition. I am 73, female. Somehow I knew this was so but never knew how to articulate or explain why and where it all went wrong for us. I always have understood a child is innocent and pure until its slate is written on. I’m definitely going to buy this book. It is so imperative to understand and internalize this for the sake of humanity and our planet and all life forms and each other and our future direction.
